new MB + CPU = problems.

I got a new MB today, MSI Neo2 Kt800pro. First issue. it detects my memory at 256. I have Corsair XMS PRO 512 meg sticks. I tried both and both come up as 256. I tried them in the 2nd slot, won't even post. Can't try slots 3+4 because my big heatsink blocks them.

Win XP installed with no errors, but, when the win boot screen comes up it just says "windows XP" no Pro under it. Not sure if it was liek this before because I never paid much attention. But it doesn't seem right.

I'm guessing it's a bad MB, but I'm not sure what to run to test it, I got it as a refurb from PC Club, they won't take it back, they will RMA it for me if it turns out to be bad. Are there are issues with this MB + Corsair memory?

My system seems to be running fine aside from the memory thing, but it only detecting 256 is telling me something is really wrong.

any ideas??
 
With A64's, memory must be in certain slots, you can't just pick any 2. Look in the manual for appropriate configuration options. I suspect you need to do 1 and 3.

And the OS loading screen is just an image. It's not indicative of anything other than the image data. You can actually edit that and you can write the word pro if you really want 🙂

Since SP2 Pro or Home is no longer displayed. and the "progress bar" is always colored blue.

 
Be sure to update your BIOS just in case. Also, consult your mobo manual for proper slot selection insofar as RAM. Post back and let us know if the BIOS update fixes your problem.

The overly large heatsink problem is unfortunate - I hope you can get by without having to buy a smaller one.
 
I updated the bios and the MB died ha. I returned it and got a Gigabyte with the NF3 chipset, seems to be working now.

the heatsink still blocks slot 3/4 so I can't run dual channel unless I get memory without the big heatsinks, oh well
