New MB/CPU + Old HDD = Stop Error

I am rebuilding my father-in-law's computer. Everthing is new except the HDD (he did not want to reinstall anything). I told him it was a gamble installing an older HDD on a new MB with a different controller.

During the boot process I get past the bios screen, but just as WinXP is about to start loading, I get a Stop Error. The message asks if I've added new HDDs or controllers and then suggests the a couple of useless things like running check disk.

I assume this is related to having a different hard drive controller on the new board. Is there anyway around this without formating and reinstalling WinXP? Perhaps a repair install? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

BTW, I had my wife help since this was for her dad - she got a nice little slice from a sharp edge in the case! Welcome to the club honey!

you can try doing a repair install, but you'll have to wipe and reload the OS at some point soon.

It is a driver issue.

Best results are usually obtained by uninstalling all of the drivers first in the old machine, then removing the hd. It is still not a sure thing.

If a repair install does happen to work, it will continue on its normal install life till it dies of bit-rot.

Unfortunately, the old machine is dead (no less than five blown capacitors on the MB). Well, I will try the repair install. If anyone else has any suggestions I'd love to hear them.

I've been successful a couple times with a repair install on the same or similar chipsets. But, it failed on non-similar chipsets.

whoa, wait a second, the motherboard has 5 blown caps on it? that's not good at all, and considering this drive was installed when this happened correct?
