New Macbook Released

As rumored, it's a Macbook using the C2D/320M combination. From a quick glance, it looks to be identical to the MBP except for the different casing.

In a more frustrating move though, Apple decided to be cheap on the RAM: it only comes with 2GB by default.🙁 So you're not really going to get it for $999, it's $999 + $100 for the 4GB upgrade, which puts it in spitting distance of the MPB in the first place.

Seems to me that they have just made it pointless. 2GB of memory just isn't enough. Most people aren't going to buy and install there own so if you add that on top of you may as well spend another $100 and get all the other features the Pro has to offer.
 
Saving a couple hundred on nonessentials that the pro has, and then a little more for a bulk discount on each one really adds up when you're buying for an institution .. (K-12 anyone?)

2GB is still fine for my wife, or anyone who is just using it to surf, write documents, spreadsheets, etc... Plus, if you're in education, you get it for $899 ((correction, $949)), which isn't a bad deal at all IMO ((correction, makes it less enticing)).

Of course my wife also needed to use her notebook in her classes. One of which required microsoft project. That of course required vmware, and 2 gigs of ram is not enough to make a usable computer running a windows vm.

I would never advise 2 gigs of ram with osx.

I used 2GB on my first gen macbook, and it ran just fine. And it ran just fine on 1GB before that, and on 512MB before that.

True, if you need to run VMWare then 2 GB is not going to cut it. But if you don't need Windows, then it's perfectly acceptable.. however, I won't disagree, it's astounding that Apple still ships systems with only 2GB.
 
According to the specs, max RAM in the new machine is only 4GB, not 8GB like the Pro model. So that is another difference.

Given the way it is spec'd, for it to be of any interest, Apple's price would need to be $899-$799. At $999, it is pointless for most people. Get the Pro model.

Educational pricing is $949 on this model not $899
 
I've cut sound for entire films on my blackbook with 2gb of memory. I did also when it had 1gig of memory but I would have to restart in the middle of the day. I wouldn't call it super responsive but it got the job done and I still use it for stage fixes opening huge sessions from my macpro on my laptop is fun :twisted:
 
eh, 2GB is fine for the most part. at least, for the market they are shooting for with this. If it were 1GB, i'd agree.. OS X likes memory. But 2GB works. Not idea, but it works.

But yes, at 999, it certain is painful. Should have been 899, and then 799 w/ edu discount.
