New MacBook: Drive icons dont show up on desktop

I a late model '09 MBP which will display the 'Macintosh HD' drive on the desktop along with any other drives that become attached to the computer. For example, if I connect to my server drive it shows up on the desktop.

I just bought a new white MacBook for my mom and it does not do the same thing. The 'Macintosh HD does not show up on the desktop and if I connect to the server or plug in an external drive it does not pop up on the desktop. They can all be accessed by going to the 'Go' tab at the top bar but its kind of annoying that they dont pop up on the desktop. If there a reason this is not happening?
