ie: She turned down roles because she knew the film would be successful???
yeah, don't try to get into the mind of someone who's got that kinda skill at their job, they don't work the way normal people do. Remember, idk any Marlon Brando interview? You can't get a compliment in that guy, he just won't let it pass.

Anyway, her role in 'America is phenomenal, i don't care if it was badly received (it was), it HIT ME so hard, i cannot get it out of my head. I gotta see more of her work.

Okay. Today is National Cinema Day and all the seats all day including D-Box, ATMOS, and 3D showings are $4 at my local CMX ('bout 2 miles from my house.) Chose the11:40AM showing hoping not so many would be going then. The theater we were in holds about 300 and there were 25 of us . Saw Gran Turismo: Based on a True Story. I'm not a gamer. Never played any racing simulation unless you count Mario Cart. Saw it in Dolby ATMOS. I loved it. I will admit I am a sucker for underdog sports movies. Thoroughly enjoyed all the racing scenes. Thought they were very well done. Loved David Harbour's performance. Last role I saw him in was Santa in Violent Night. I laughed, teared up, and would have spent a lot of time on the edge of my seat if I wasn't in a theater recliner. If you see it, I hope you like it too.

Ashoka 6/10.

This is going to be another Obi-Wan Kenobi, I can feel it in my balls.

Acting is stiff and over dramatized (IMO it's the direction not the actors, everyone keeps waiting for everyone else to finish talking as if that adds gravity to the scene).

Pacing is a mess, long bits of nothing happening then poorly choreographed fight scenes and plot bombs.

More of that cramped set feeling from whatever filming thing they used in obi wan.

Another map mguffin to chase down.

Some hope from the late Ray Stevenson as a sort of dark/grey Jedi villain but not much beyond that.

Oppenheimer in 70mm
8/10

It's pretty loud at times, and yet the occasional word of dialog is unclear just like streaming at home. But no rewind/subtitles. :expressionless: First time at the cinema this decade, will wait for National Cinema Day in a year. :tearsofjoy:

That's how it's supposed to be, according to Nolan. You don't hear everything in real life too and often have to nod your head like you heard everything just fine :p

@GodisanAtheist

I'm starting to get really really tired of Star Wars. I love Star Wars, but with the shitty prequels, and the shitty sequels, Disney invalidating whole series and books as non-canon, it's just a mess right now.

-Disney is flooding the zone with content and, realizing how badly they fucked up the Sequels, is cramming all of their content between the prequels and the OT, or the OT and the Sequel trilogy which naturally makes everything super low stakes since we already know the end state of the universe.

What really makes the whole thing so much more frustrating are there are clearly some really good ideas floating around in the swamp that is new star wars. Kylo Ren's let the past die, the dark Jedi in Ashoka, everything about the first season of Mandalorian, a general (aparant) desire to move passed the Jedi/Sith dichotomy... But the execution is so poor and it's surounded by so much design by committee trash that it can't event break out of the schlock into cult status.

Strange Days (1995)

Ralph Fiennes, Tom Sizemore, Juliette Lewis, Angela Bassett (who I thought I ought to recognise, she's in the Wakanda movies for example), and that "Relax!" parking attendant from Ferris Bueller's Day Off :)

Many/most American movies like to portray America as they would like it to look. This is not one of those films; for example it's set at the turn of the millennium with celebrations starting in LA, a lot of chaos/anarchy in the streets, police are out in militarised gear and equipment, and the film portrays corruption among those with power and influence as a much more mundane and everyday occurrence than is usual for American movies IMO.

Ralph Fiennes's character plays a former cop and now digital pimp (like the kid in the first Matrix movie) whose life is circling in the toilet bowl. He encounters content that he and a friend of his feels compelled to investigate.

I'd classify it as a watchable murder mystery flick.

Just watched Oppenheimer as well, IMAX same as you. Sound was way to loud in some scenes - guess it wasn't the projectionist’s fault. Other wise, great cast , great writing, Cillian did an outstanding job. First time at the movies since Covid - so I’ll give it a 9/10. Highly recommended.

i watched The Invasion - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0427392/reference/

2007 remake - yes, once again - of Invasion of The Body Snatchers, from the director who did the otherwise excellent Billions & Downfall. Starring Nicole Kidman as Mom & Psychiatrist Carol Bennell, and Daniel Craig as the guy who previously was Donald Sutherland. Plant-based virus comes to earth. Bodies aren't snatched, they are just infected with the virus that makes you one with the world, man. The mounting tension is ridiculed by the fact that she's got 40+ minutes of staring at OBVIOUSLY MYSTERIOUS CIRCUMSTANCES and then does nothing about it. Then they discover the virus, and because they are rational science people they find a cure within a few minutes. Protagonist is also immune to the virus which again detracts from any semblance of risk she might be in. Obviously the virus makes people into sentient aliens who need to give a speech about how their world is prefect, and since there are no actual bodies that are being killed to make more ominous plants, they might as well have just denied anything and patiently wait for everyone to be infected, but noooo.
Helicopter comes to pick her up when she is running away, they spray the vaccine, film is over.

Absolutely useless film that doesn't even TRY to do something decently or creatively, but at least i had a Ben & Jerry sundae (Oh My Banoffie Pie)

5.5/10 - i would MUCH rather watch the 1995 Dustin Hoffman film Outbreak than this (which actually *does* feature Donald Sutherland)

Forgot, i also watched
Atomic Blonde (2017)

Surprisingly well-choreographed and well-shot action scenes; Charlize Theron's varying levels of nudity, and a lady-lady sex scene.

I have very little to add. C.T. doesn't really do it for me in a sexytime way, and the F/F lovestory was shoehorned with such prepotence to turn lesbians straight. The whole "let's jump on the Bourne bandwagon" plot was both simplistic and at the same time overcomplicated. Like, Plot - resolution - overcomplication - further plot - solution - overcomplication etc. and the film really loves to give away everything, really really wants to make sure you understand the plot twist and then the next. Just trope over trope.

Acting was decent, and the fighting is by far the best thing about the film. Character motivations, it's difficult to get invested in, when they are the same fucking stereotype from every spy film ever.

... i mean... this film has TWO plot twists in what basically is a post-credit scene. Like, the main villain is dead, the hero has obtained the mcGuffin, there is even a "the film is over" voiceover speech by the hero. Writing a review for this film is like writing a food review for a macdonalds burger.

6/10 but just barely yo.

I've never been all that interested in movies. No idea why. So even things that are 20-30 years old are often new to me.

The past couple days I've been watching old Lara Croft movies. I've never really liked AJ. I mean, of course she's lovely but there was just something about her character that came through in the parts I've seen her play.

But I really like her in the first 2 LC's. Haven't seen the 2018 release yet.

I thought salt was pretty good 👍
I watched Maleficent with my mind made up that I would not like it. But by the end of the movie, I had a smile on my face.

I think her last movie I saw was "Those who wish me dead". Wasn't amazing but wasn't bad either. I don't really like her as a person due to her drama with Brad Pitt and how she broke up Aniston's relationship with Brad but she IS a competent actress.

I don't really care about her personal life. Just what she brings to the screen.

So Angelina broke up Brad's marriage. Do you think Brad may have broken up his marriage at all or it's just the woman's fault?
