Lilo shoudl work from anywhere on an 8gb drive. If you can't get it to work though then Mandrake can also install GRUB. There's also 2 or 3 more floating about. Just do a search for boot loader on freshmeat. Note: I've never tried anything but Lilo and Grub so I don't know how those others work.
littleprince: Nothing's wrong w/ Mandrake if you're an extreme newbie or if you want a fairly plain out of the box setup. However, if you want to change around your system to your preferences, optimize it, etc., then Mandrake is just too jumbled around and messy to deal with. Even though it's not quite as user-friendly (until you get it), Slackware (and I've heard Debian, though it's been years since I ran Debian.) is much more cleanly organized and easy to configure to the way you want it, at least for me.
