My friend wants to know if it is possible to run AOL on Linspire? He doesn't want to buy if it is not going to run on AOL 8.0 or above.

Doubtfull, last I checked AOL was a Windows-only thing.

edit: do you mean AOL or AIM? Because there are AIM clients for Linux.

He wants to install AOL Broswer on Linux.

Don't let your friend get linspire. It is a horror of a linux distro, and costly too. Under thier marketing scheme, it would have cost me over 3x the amount I paid for winxp, in the same time frame, due to how they charge for software, etc.

Debian, Mandrake, and SuSE are all cheap/free alternatives that are much more secure and stable than linspire, and are just as easy to install.

Gentoo, which is the distro I use, is also very easy to install, IF, and I mean IF you print out the install guide, the use flag guide, xorg guide, video card guide, sound guide, and gui guide, and read them. Plus, since you build gentoo from scratch, you actully learn how linux works some, which is a good thing. If you read the guides, and follow them closely, even your grandma could install it.

Linspire doesnt allow user accounts, and runs only as root, which is VERY VERY bad. Even if your friend is going to be the only one to use his computer, he should always do everything as a user, not root, and use root only when needed.

As for the AOL browser, why on earth would he want to use it?? There are a number of browsers for linux, with Firefox and Konqueror are two really good ones, and both have tabbed browsing, which is so nice its not even funny.
