New Lenovo T60 - EISA Partition

Yeah - just about have everything set up as I want it on the new T60 (14.1 in LCD) except for a partition that really annoys me. It is a Lenovo partition (EISA, 5.1GB) labeled "ServiceV002" and is not lettered.

I assume it is some sort of gee whiz IBM-Lenovo recovery partition, or does it serve some other purpose? I really would like to get rid of it, but am not quite sure how to do that.

Anyone experienced with that?

From what I hear, the Lenovo recovery partition is more than just a factory reset; you can select what you want the factory reset to install. As for if you can copy it off to a DVD or something or just delete it without any harm to your system, I don't know the answer to that one.

Yeah - that is what it is supposed to do - but - the T60 manual that came with it is absolutely pathetic. It took me several days of exploring physically to find out where the PCExpress slot was. The big blue key that is supposed to activate the ThinkVantage functions are not of much use to me. Other than that and the EISA partition, it is a very good machine, well put together.

My next task is to see if I can create a bootable flash memory device for it.

Thanks for the reply.

You might want to check out the Lenovo forum on Notebookreview.com to see if they have something on this issue.

Got one thing resolved! The T60 supports bootable flash drives, so I created one using Acronis TrueImage, and it worked! Now I can clone the main drive to a 2nd drive in the Ultrabay adapter after booting offline with the thumb drive. Cool!

Once I get a viable duplicate drive that works, I can then have the freedom to experiment. Will check the other issue on the Lenovo forum. Thanks for the lead.

Thanks - got the Service/Repair manual and the User Guide in PDF.

After experimenting yesterday, I think I can live with the EISA partition. I was able to clone the drive and now have a 100% backup HDD using the Ultrabay adapter. That is a very cool feature.

Cloning was not easy - I finally found the key - there is a feature in Vista called "Drive Protection." Once I turned that off, I could clone easily, but, in order to boot the backup drive, I had to run a Vista repair because the OS could not find the partition boundary. That was easy to fix.

Hi Corkyg,

I don't know if you still interest in knowing a different easy solution about backing up EISA partition.
Actually Norten ghost14 can back it up easily,at a screen you choose to "unhidden drive" you then can colon it just like other primary drives.

Hope this helps

Wow, very old thread, but helpful for me to read as I'm getting a new Thinkpad delivered tomorrow. My plan is to yank the factory 160GB HD, put it in a box and pop in a fresh 320gb 7200rpm drive I have sitting on my desk here. I'll install windows fresh, install the drivers manually (the ones that Windows doesn't find automatically) and keep the 160gb drive in case I want to sell it or something. This way I don't hve to worry about dealing with restore discs. And if I sell the machine, I can pop in the old HD and the buyer basically as a factory new experience from the start.

Good plan, Nerp! I have twice replaced the 160GB drive that came with the 160. First with a 200/7200 rpm, and now with a WDC 320 Scorpio Black - also 7200.

What is interesting to me is how long I have had the t60! It purrs right along and has been all iover the world since 2007. Wow! This is a voice from the past! 🙂
