New LCD monitor, flickering: bad???

I just got a new Samsung LCD 15" monitor for our server, but it seems to have lines flickering up and down the monitor which go all the way across the screen. Is it a bad monitor, or is that normal!.

It is a Samsung 150S, connected to a KVM switch on 60hz at 1024x768 resolution. I tried 56hz at 800x600 but it still does the same thing!

I know with the Samsung 151S, it will act like this when the refresh rate is too high. Freaked me out when I first saw it... I thought it was defective.

What videocard? My Radeon 9700's control panel lists some options to tick under the Options tab: Alternate DVI Operational Mode, and Reduce DVI frequency on High-Resolution Displays.

I have a defective ViewSonic the flickers yellow due to a half-broken backlight.

But since you say it's lines it sounds more like a refreshrate/DVI freuqency problem as stated before.

Plug it straight into the machine, no KVM switch. Install the drivers and ICMs from ViewSonic, update video card drivers if you can.

Report back with results.

not your day 🙁

at work we have alot of lcd's, mostly 18" ones, a few 15" and one or two 17"
One of the 15" flickers like that, havent checked it out because no complaints yet 😛

Is it a ProLiant server by any chance? I have a Samsung 151S on my Proliant 6500, and no matter what i do, it looks like crap. I moved the monitor to my desktop and it looked fine, and then i tried it on a ProLiant 1600, and it was the same as it was on the first ProLiant. Maybe those server's videocards just arent meant for LCD displays. Oh well.

LCD monitors are not supposed to flicker at all. Also, do not set a refresh rate other than the default because they really don't "refresh." They are "staring pixels," not the product of moving scan lines. They are flicker-free with the default setting of 60.

OK - the question now is, does the server's video card have a digital outport, or are you running analog? Further, LCDs only perform well at their native resolution - so that is where you should set it. Anything else is being interpolated by pixel addition and subtraction. The spec for the LCD should tell you what that is. Most large ones are 1280 x 1024. Anything else sucks on them. Also, try it direct - the KVM may be screwing it up unless it has a digital outport.

Ok, I tried it direct, still same thing. It doesnt like "black" colors. For instance when you click shutdown, and the screen turns dark, you can see tons of little black lines flickering.

I think it is the video card for the server, because the other server hooked up to the KVM switch does not flicker when activated.
