Go for the one with the best response time, less than 20MS. IF it were me, personally I would wait for one of Samsungs new 12MS response LCD's or grab one there new 16MS LCD's. Dell also has some really nice 16MS LCDs, so be sure to check them out.

This is a great bargain for a 16MS LCD:

BenQ 16MS 17" LCD for $385 @ newegg

Don't worry about how many colors it supports, it can reproduce all the missing colours through an advanced process called dithering.

I'd actually go with the NEC 1760NX or the Hitachi 17" LCD, who's name I can't remember. Both are much higher regarded than either monitor you listed.

Wth are you talking about? The VP171b(s) has 2 standard 15 pin d subs and 1 dvi connector.

Gaming on LCD's is fine as long as your monitor does not ghost.

There's a close minded, not to mention absurd, comment.

You've obviously never played games on a 20"+ LCD with a 16ms response time... it is comprobable, if not better, than a CRT.

Not trying to insight a riot but...

I kind of thought zodder's comment was accurate... If not for the sake of ghosting and whatever else uninvited side effects come from trying to play games on an LCD, what about the fact that LCDs don't resize resolution well? I mean usually a 17" LCD has a native resolution of 1280 x 1024. And the problem with that would be that for different reasons players may want to set the game at 800x600 or some other resolution, and the LCD wont produce very good imaging then.

Also, I've tried gaming on an AG Neovo that allegedly has the 16ms response (or better 15/10) and what not, but I still saw ghosting/blurring or some other form of image quality degradation.

In all honesty I've been wanting to get a 17" LCD myself, but I'm don't really have the excess cash so as to throw at something that isn't going to be a clear improvement over my SONY Trinitron HMD-A400 And I am first and fore most a gamer; and my hardware + games for some reason or another (depending on the game) require that I play at a resolution < 1280x1024. I'm really looking forward to seeing an LCD worthy of my scarce dollars, but until then, I don't think there exist an LCD > my CRT for my gaming needs.

If anyone has any suggestions as for such LCDs, please tell me of it. The latest ones I had been exploring were the Solarism LM1730(but it has no DVI) and the Viewsonic vp171b. But I don't think either one of those are >= to my CRT for my gaming needs.

Honest comment/question/concerns not trying to get a flam-A-thon going here .

Pfft, it doesnt look that bad. Sony's LCD rescale the best. Most games these days support the resolutions of those moniters. If you seeing ghosting on a 16ms, your eyes must be burning on looking at that CRT.

First of all, thank you for the replies, I appreciate it when people take the time to address my concerns.

I am not as preoccupied about most games these days, as I am about my games... And unfortunately the image quality isn?t there, for my games...

That one has a 25ms response time.
I did leave a link to the AG Neovo I was referring to and the site does say 15/10ms (are they added together? I honestly don't know how this works I thought it was the average between the 2 or something along those lines...). So I would like to understand, how you arrived at the number 25ms?

Panel Size 19" (480mm)
Brightness 250cd/m2 (Typical)
Contrast Ratio 500:1 (Typical)
Neo V Technology Yes
Viewing Angle (H/V) 170o / 170o(Minimum)
Display Resolution SXGA 1280 x 1024
Input Signal Analog, Video, Digital
Response Time 15ms / 10ms (Typical)
Net Dimension 436 x 426 x 200mm
(17.2" x 16.8" x 7.9")
Net Weight 8.2Kg (18.0lb)

Also, please, if you have nothing constructive to say then please say nothing. At least, please don't address or relate anything you have to say to/with me, unless you're saying SOMETHING. I'm not really looking for some "pffft'n" fanboyism. I don't own stock in CRTs so I'm not here to promote them; I'm more of in search of a good LCD. And I would be more pleased to read about an LCD that addresses my concerns; especially if people could get specific; rather than read "pfft"

I have done, I would like to think, some researching, for a good candidate. I thought I left a hint when I mentioned the 2 monitors that I had explored, among the many LCDs I have read up on. I have read forums and hardware review sites in search of an LCD > my CRT; because I can not afford to plop cash into something that will not be clearly my money's worth better than what I already own. So What I'm really hoping for is for someone that will say "The xMODEL from yBRAND is great because it uses So&So technology, and you can go to url.forrevieworreference.com"

Would be cool if we could focus a little better on the question at hand, and if we could be a little more thorough.

Thank you again, I honestly do appreciate the efforts to address my concerns.

Thanks axemanxt40. I had already posted by the time I read your reply... I'll research the Sony SDM-S73.

the 15ms/10ms refers to the rise and fall time of updating the pixel. They are added together to get the total response time when making a pixel display grey. This isn't the absolute response time though, as it varies based on color (if i'm not mistaken...)

many 16ms response time LCDs have a 12ms/4ms rise/fall times.

I'm sending back my 172X today. There didn't seem to be any dithering. As for ghosting...it was completely nonexistent in some games and annoyingly apparent in others. UT2004 had no ghosting no matter what I did. Counter-strike ghosted so bad I got dizzy. May have something to do with C-S probably running at higher framerate on my video card than UT2004...that disproportion may be what leads to ghosting in which case maybe that sync thing where the frame rates on your video card are limited to match your monitor's refresh rates may have helped. In any case, I had a bright green pixel in the center of my screen so I wanted to send it back anyway...now I'm just trying to get to see a VP171B in action to make a comparison.

Get an LCD with 1600x1200 native resolution, and you can run in 800x600 mode without any scaling artifacts.

However, the upconverters in these LCDs are pretty dang good, especially while playing a game... Iseriously doubt you would notice. However, if it bothers you, buy a top of the line CRT, because no LCD will live up to your standards.

Not according to this review of another 1600x1200 LCD which I believe uses the same panel.

Same panel as what?

I usually play my games at 1600x1200, unless it is too intensive, then I will knock it down to 1024x768, and the upscaling artifacts are hard to see. Definitely not enough to complain about, especially with the motion of the game (remember, you aren't looking at freeze frames).

Both the LCD you listed are the SAME panel. Both have DVI and Analog connections. Get the cheaper of the 2. I got the Viewsonic vp171s and its an amazing LCD.
