New Lawn tractor

I have about 1 acre of lawn to cut. I've been cutting it with my craftsman 21" push mower. The cut is great but it takes me around 3 hours to finish. I will be getting a riding mower this year but I don't know which to get. I hear good and bad about every tractor out there except John Deere where I hear nothing bad only good, but the price is up there and I don't think 1 acre really justifies the added bulk of a Deere, maybe if I had 2+ but not for my little yard.

at chubbywallet they have a %10 off anything coupon just don't buy a canadian mower that they sell I think it is just the crappy yard machines but beware 🙂

I have a John Deere 343 with 48 inch deck love it....best lawn tractor you can buy. Mine cost around 7500 for the 23 horse liquid cooled model

Forgot about the Cubs. I never really thought anything much about them. We had one at work and it kep breaking down.

23 HP!? For one Acre!? whoa! I would get the bottom of the line Deere for $1500 but I don't need as much as you have.

Depends if it is flat or hilly I also like my power steering and power deck 😉

Very flat which is why I can still get the job done with my push, but I'm getting older and having less time. I figured I don't need much more than a push so I'll get into a low end rider. Plus then I can get attachments (carts, spreaders and such). But every tractor I look at doesn't even have a cup holder. Power deck would be nice!

My parent's have one of those big John Deere front mount commercial mowers, mowing lawn for them was fun, especially since they had 5+ acres to mow.😀
My wife and I don't have a lawn mower, not nearly as fun. 🙁

Nothing runs like a Deere.

Another option: Dixon ZTR. That would be a fun little lawn tractor.

We have a cub cadet TANK now at work. I wish they would let IT cut the grass but maintenance would get upset.

Cub Cadet. We love ours, got it about a year ago. Lowe's will give you 10% off if you open an acct or if you snag a coupon (they take Home Depot coupons too). My research last year led me to the conclusion that Deere's lawn tractor line just isn't of the high quality that their farm tractors are known for.

I have a John Deere L120. Not a top of the line, but it has a 20HP engine and a 48" blade.

I'll second the commercial walk behind. I have an Exmark metro 36". Got it used for a little over a thousand.

Simple design = less stuff to break
Sturdy construction
Almost zero turn (you'd need a hydrostat to make it a true zero turn), which is especially helpfull if you have lots of trees to go around.
Best of all it has a kohler engine. No more Briggs for me

It's the difference between a sports car and a luxury sedan
Takes about an hour to cut my 1.5 acres. Could go faster, but I have it set for mulching.

Thinking of gettnig the Deere L110 or L118E myself. Similar situation. Takes 2 hours to mow lawn w/a Honda Harmony Hydrostatic and time has become a premium.

My neighbors have beaten the crap out of their Deere and it still runs great. The one kid was pulling wheelies with it slamming it from reverse to foward.

Most of the pros around this area have what looks like ornery's setup. They have powerful "push" mowers with a metal slab that comes out the bottom which they stand on. Those things zoom and cut lawn FAST.

You have yet to list one good quality tractor.

Deer, cheap paper thin mowing decks, rust out very quickly.

Craftsman, same thing plus cheap sheetmetal frames.

Murry, everything is crap on these.

Yardmachine and Yardman, both have poor decks, poor bearings and lousy quality control.

You want a real machine ?

Go purchase a Gravely, an X-Mark, Scag, Bobcat, Arians or Simplicity.

Toro, MTD and Snapper are crap as well.

Take my advice, I used to work at several rental shops (A TO Z Rentals) and used to run a commercial landscaping machine repair business. (Fairfield outdoor power)

I think it depends what level of Deere you are looking at. Their lower end stuff is junk, granted, but their higher end riding mowers are quite good. It depends if you are looking at a "lawn mower" or a "garden tractor"

oh yeah... And Craftsman lawn mowers (and quite a few of the other cheap store brand mowers are made by electrolux!)

I would not touch a Deere with a 10 foot pole attached to another 10 foot pole. The things are pure crap. Deere's reputation is built on their heavy equipment and they farm out the small stuff like lawn tractors to crappy, sub-par companies.

Get a Simplicity. They still make tractors that aren't 90% plastic. General rule of thumb: If the hood is plastic and the gas tank is under the seat, the tractor is a pice of sh!t.

My parents had some half cheapo deal from the local hardware store. That thing went through hell and back. So I wouldnt say Deere is necesarily quality. But, the only experience I have with Deere is equipment MUCH bigger then probably anyone on this board has 😉
Although, I believe it was the 7000 series combines, those things hadnled mud very well. I was suprised.

I say get one of those commercial sized riders with the 2 lever steering control from Lowes.

Right on buddy. Ariens and Simplicity are my favourites. Had a friend who worked for years at a shop that sold Wheelhorse and Deere mowers. The Deeres were _always_ back in for service. Deere's big, farm stuff is decent (I'm an AC man, myself) but the small stuff for home use isn't worth half of what they charge.
