Just got a call from Best Buy and they have deemed my old laptop as unrepairable and would like to replace it.
I have 1300-1500 (forget the original price) to spend.

Can you guys make a recommendation on which one to get? I had a 2 toshiba's from them - nothing but problems. The last one was a compaq and lasted 3 years until this recent problem.

The problems this one had was - power plug on laptop went back, dvdrw drive broke, and keys broke off the KB, and 1 bad pixel.

From best buy i'd go with a Compaq/HP, my cousin just got a HP Special Edition laptop. I think its a Core Duo, Glossy Black color, 14" Wide screen and he spent around 1200. I'd stay away from Toshiba's in my own opinion

Hmm...they aren't able to send it back to the manufacturer? Those are very fixable problems, however without a warranty i don't think ti's something to do so I guess buying a new laptop would be the way to go.

I have had terrible experiences with best buy in general, and purchasing their HP notebooks were never pleasing. That was 4-5 years ago though. I'd recommend go with the Compaq/HP as well. Some of the latest ones I've seen are pretty cool. Slim and very portable. Good battery life too.

They sent it to their repair center. It exceedes the amount/worth of the laptop so they are replacing it. I'm not complaining because I get a new one for nothing. I get to pick one in the price range that I spend originally. I had really bad luck with Toshiba's previously, and was thinking of going compaq/HP. This last one was a Compaq.

They kinda screwed me last time on the exchange. Instead of mailing in the rebate form, they said they'd just take it off the top so I wouldn't have any out of pocket money for the 3yr warranty. I thought at first - great deal, but now I find out, instead of picking one thats worth 1700, I only get to choose one worth 1450 :(

yes it's good and you hear wrong. but with $1200, there is no reason that you shouldn't go core2duo.

just to clear up Centrino is just a Pentium M chip paired with an Intel Wireless card and chipset.

Pentium M's aren't anything to be steered away from, they are just getting to last generation. Core Solo's replaced them. Core Duo's are still up to par, Core2Duo's only show max 10% increase of performance compaired to Core Duo in a laptop configuration. Not too much of a difference. Just some things to look at.

thanks! Unfortunately I found out after playing with it and not noticeing at first, that it came with XP Home and was suppose to come with Media Center edition. I find out that Best Buy tells me to contact HP and HP says to take it back to Best Buy, haha!

Sad part #2. This is really my wifes laptop. I'm stuck with my lesser desktop :(
