I'm not sure wether to agree with pirred908 or not.
While Windows XP SP2 has gone a long way in helping with the virus and spyware problems out there. The best way to look at is you'll pay more up front for the Apple laptop but less in the long run for technical support.
Unless you are willing to learn a lot quickly a PC laptop will be slightly cheaper up front (probably 200 - 300 dollars) but cost a lot in technical support. The Dell guy in India won't be much help for removing nasty malware from your system. All it takes is 7 hours of technical support at $50 an hour to make the PC laptop more expensive in the long run. A severely infected system can easily cost you 3 to 4 hours to have it cleaned up.
If you have a family friend or someone who will work on your PC laptop for cheap then by all means go for one. I got a laptop with Radeon 9600 video, 1gb ram, 80gb hard drive, and dvd+-rw drive for several hundred dollars less than a similarly equipped Apple laptop. However I support computers for a living and have no problems dealing with any problems that pop up.
As much as I'd like to say go for a PC laptop, unless you have a cheap outlet of support, get the Apple Laptop.
