Im looking at three models, all priced around $1000.

I intend to use this notebook for most everything. Light to moderate gaming on it (mid tier graphics should suffice) some photo editing here and there. DVD burning, movie playback. MP3ing, experimenting with other OS's or shells like litestep. Online poker, web browsing etc.... basically a bit of everything. So I want a pretty powerful laptop, but I don't want to go crazy cause Im trying to stay within a price range here.

Any reason why? The HP has a bit better graphics card from what I can tell, but the diplay should be a bit better on the Dell. Other than that they are pretty similar all in all.

I'd avoid HP/Compaq from how many hardware issues I see from them, I personally bought a Dell I like it. Ideally get a Thinkpad. Dell also gives u the option to get XP instead of Vista :)

For dell make sure to goto their small business website, you can sometimes find better prices there.

Dell Inspiron Laptops are very reliable ... and they do not weigh a lot. They are a good value for the cost.

Right now, I would seriously look at this one - just a bit over your budget, but worth it. (Just wait a month. :) )
