Hey guys I got a new laptop today, Whats some good software to download that is legit and free? I downloaded avast first then fire fox. I had there were some must have stuff with fire fox but I cannot remember for the life of me.

I think one was a pop up blocker, another was a encryption program that encrypted your keystrokes so hackers cant easily log into your stuff. Plus some others that I can't remember right now.

I'm just looking for some good must have programs, thanks in advance guys I am extremely happy that I have a damn pc now, no more iphone internet usage at home sheesh...

I use Open Office 3.2.1 for my office docs
Thunderbird for my email
Fox-It for reading PDF's.
PrimoPDF for creating PDF's (installs a PDF printer)
Panda Cloud Antivirus
VLC for playing videos.

All of these are on my Windows boot and are free and legit.

Of course, I also installed Mint 9 (Linux) and all of the above where installed by default :)

Steam is a must have. Go get your free games like zombie panic and keep an eye out for all the killer deals. I have a separate steam account just for my notebook.

the first thing i did was delete that norton shit off of there, i deleted alot of stuff off of there manually, i'm sure there is alot of stuff left probably. I left the lil dumb games on there for my daughter and the ole lady to play if they want to.

Anything that didn't look familiar got deleted off of the drive right away, i'm still looking thru it to see if there is other stuff to get off of there.

I would also recommend these:

VLC Player
Foobar Player
Pidgin IM
Thunderbird
Firefox
Macrium Reflect (for system images - there is a free edition)

its a compaq cq60-615DX
I know it's a cheapy but for only web browsing the occasional cd burn, forums and email this thing is doing very good in terms of speed. I dont multitask for crap so this lil single core is doing me just fine.

My budget was very low and it was either this laptop or a netbook so either way i would get a single core cpu so I just chose the laptop since it has more ram, way bigger screen, bigger hard drive and a dvd drive

If I could get a cheap lil dual core cpu to throw in this laptop I would later on but for right now this is more then enough for what I'm doing. I used my buddies dell gx260 today and it was good enough for me

Macrium Reflect (for system images - there is a free edition)

Those are most of my must install apps(never used Macrium though). I'll add these...

Open Office
Paint.NET
Avira
Malwarebytes free edition
Notepad++
7Zip

Why are you looking for solutions to problems you don't have? Software is a problem solver, there's no point installing a bunch of software unless you have a specific requirement.

My list, after a format/clean install:

Chrome
7zip
Notepad++
Paint.NET
Adobe Reader (I dunno why, I just don't like Foxit...and its plugin doesn't work with Chrome)
Open Office
Windows Live Essentials (Writer, Photo Gallery, Movie Maker)
Windows Security Essentials
Digsby

Lol really? way to contribute to the thread...

I actually agree with the comment. Personally, I would not install almost any of the stuff already mentioned because either I do not like it or would never use it. Thus, they would be not much better to me than the junkware that came bundled with the system.

The noScript plug in for firefox is invaluable. You have to spend a little time getting it set up to work on the sites you use the most (probably less than 5 minutes per 2 hours of browsing), but it will cut the number of ads (particularly flash ads) down to nothing. If you like to have a lot of browser tabs open it can make a HUGE difference in performance. (In my case, it made a Celeron processor based machine actually useful again).
