New laptop ... want to dump files to desktop hdd

Okay simple task ... Just got a new laptop and I want to still be able to transfer files and do backups to my desktop.

Simplest way?

Just run the Home Networking Wizard on both. Then go to My Computer on both and right click your hard drive, choose Sharing, and use the box that pops up to allow your hard drives to be shared. The you should be able to go to My Network Places and see the other comps hard drive.

Well, you should be able to disable it (I'm assume by "it" you mean sharing your HD) from the same place you enabled it. Go to My Computer, right click your hard drive, and choose Sharing. Then disable it from there.

Although any decent router or firewall should protect you from anyone on the Internet trying to access your HD. I would not be worried about it.

These are the options. You should decide what is the simplest for you.

Ignore the prices in the links above stick to the principles. The same or similar hardware can be found for 60%-90% less.
