Brand new, 4 days old, HP n5470, Windows ME. I've used the Search-Files or Folders many times already, so it worked when I got it. Now it's dead. I enter the file name I'm looking for, and when I click "Search Now" it does nothing.

My only call to HP Support was a waste of 20 minutes of toll call, so I went to MS KNowledge Base, and found an entry for Windows 2000 that suggested that if you iinstalled Office 2000 to NT, then upgraded to W2000, then upgraded to Office 2000 SR-1, you might not be able to open the Search. Sounds like that symptom meant you click on the Start menu, then Search, then Files or Folders, and the Search doesn't even open to where you can enter your filename to search for. In my case I can open the search, it just does nothing when you click Search Now. I did install Office 2000 SR-1, which is why I thought it might be the culprit somehow. But again, the MSKB is for Windows 2000, not ME.

It suggested

To resolve this issue, click Start, click Run, type regsvr32 oleaut32.dll, and then click OK. This reregisters Oleaut32.dll.

I tried that, no luck.

I'm aghast to find that apparently there's no Mindows ME that comes with the laptop. There's a System Recovery CD, which apparently will do a format/reinstall for you, but nothing I can use like I do my 98se CD.

Anyone got advice here?

Thanks

F

yes, I installed tweakui the other day, downloaded version 1.33 and installed. But ... where is it that I could have disabled searching? I don't recall seeing that

thats really bad o them to just give u a system recovery disk rather than the full win ME disk. Usually they have to give u the full thing as you paid for it with your system.

As your phone calls aren't working , send off a few emails to HP, send to various address from HP to ensure a responce.
