I appologize if this isn't quite the right forum for this post...

I am looking into getting a new laptop. The requirements for this are: $2000 Canadian or less, DVD, 256 MB RAM, 10 gig HD, integrated modem and 10/100 lan, and a screen size of 14" or more. Oh, and NO Celerons...

Currently I am looking at the Compaq 700CA, as well as the 1700US, which seems to be available from radioshack.ca for $1999. I have also given some thought to the HP 5415 (duron 900) I believe it is.

Does anyone have any suggestions or comments on the laptops I've mentioned, or other laptops which might meet the requirements? This laptop will be used mostly for school and work, which means alot of code, and also for watching dvds or playing mp3s on the road. A long battery life would be handy, given that finding a plugin in the lecture halls is a little difficult sometimes. :)

I got a Dell 4100 for $1200(US). 866Mhz P3-M (.13 micron SpeedStep)/320MB PC-133/DVD-ROM/extra battery/10GB HD/56K& LAN/ATI Mobility Radeon 16MB DDR/14.1" TFT with 1024x768 native resolution.

It came with WinME (that abortion is replaced with my Win2K) but the new ones have XP; I also think you can get a 1Ghz for the same price or a few dollars more. Even the GeForce2Go has dropped in price now the Mobility Radeon 7500 is available for top dollar.

Nice notebook and it plays all the current games very satisfactorily.

I would recommend the Sager NP2280E it should work nicely for around 1300.00 (USA).

Maybe I should have also said No Macs... :)

Thanks for all the information.

The only problem I have with Dells is that they try to package too much with them, so you end up paying more, and you've got to order them online, meaning you've also got to pay the shipping. I tried their site, but the cheapest laptop I could configure (with what I needed) was about $2400 CDN.

I haven't seen Sager notebooks before, I'll give them a look before making my decision.
