New Laptop Problem

I'm not familiar with laptops and I'm not familiar with Vista, so when my friend brought this problem to my attention my immediate thought was to come here...

I have not seen this problem in person so this is all I have to go on.

Apparently the problem is as follows:
Each time the machine is powered down it drops everything, even items saved to the hard drive, and assigns a temp user profile as if it is the first time the computer is being used.

Any ideas?

bad install of Vista more than likely. since they lose everything when it powers down. I'd recommend the wipe the drive and reinstall vista, and if they are not really into vista, get XP.

Sure - what does the event log say, particularly the system and application event logs?
