New laptop mobo in old case

I'm note sure if this is the best place to post this thread, but I'm interested in knowing if it is at all possible to replace a laptop motherboard with a new series. I have a Compaq Presario 1247. Please no jokes! I've read all the posts about Compaq laptops especially Presario 1247's. I'm wondering if it is possible to replace the mobo with possibly a 1700. I build PC's but have absolutely no experience with laptop hardware. My desktop PC experience leads me to believe more than memory and harddrives are upgradeable on my 1247. If not, I'm stuck and need to purchase a new laptop that completely serves my needs. Possibly a Toshiba. But I won't until I'm sure I can do nothing more with my 1247. It served me well unitl I was forced to accept I needed a faster processor and better graphics chip to run many of the games I love to play while deployed away from my home machine. All advice and suggestions are welcome.

I think the biggest problem you would face ( forgoing that you could get your hands on a laptop board ) is the placement of the heat sink, mounting studs and connections. I will not even go into the connections and mounting placement for the hard drive, cd-rom, external connections, display, etc. etc...

Probably not. The motherboard is, perhaps, the most propriatary component of a laptop. They probably have different shapes, different memory slot locations, different screw hole locations. I would be surprised if you could.
