I just bought a new laptop, i dont know if it was a good idea as i dont know alot about them but i bought this one Acer Aspire 5738PG-6555 with these specs:

Intel core 2 duo T6600(2.2Ghz, 2MB cache), 4GB ram, 250GB 5400rpm hdd, Radeon 4570, 15.6" 1366x768 screen. Win 7 home prem.

I bought it to watch movies on while at work, will mostly be used as media playback and old games, roms, and basic websurfing. It has HDMI out so i hope it works well hooked up to my HDTV.

I ordered it online and will get it next week and ill post impressions.

I know nothing about mobile graphics is a 4570 going to suck, it has 512MB DDR3 dedicated memory? i hope not as bad as a intel x4500MHD. I was not going to buy one with intel graphics thats why i got this one, how much better is a 4570? could i play L4D maybe? Just bought the ID pack on steam so at least i can play the old doom games and quake :)

I did ask a few months ago, did some reaserch decided i didnt want Intel GPU and all laptops in canada under $600 had the Intel X4500 or ATI 3200 so i decided on the Asus 1201N netbook because of ION(9400M GPU, sounded good). But then there were huge supply issues and i wasnt able to find one and the review of it on anandtech had it sucking pretty bad at gaming, that atom 330 CPU isnt as fast as dual core 1.6Ghz sounds.

And this wasnt much more money, only $170 more, for a real laptop with core 2 duo.

And it was a boxing day sale that started online early and i had to buy before it sold out at that price, which it did 10 min after i ordered it so its a good thing i was looking at the website when they started the sale.

Edited: I just realized this thing has a touch screen, is that a good thing or a bad thing?

Watching movies while at work? You must have an "in" with your employer. In today's job market, that seems a bit risky.

Its a strange situation, I dispatch tow trucks and work 7pm to 7am, thats a long shift, as you can imagine its not that busy in the middle of the night, my boss doesnt care what i do to pass the time, read, watch movies, play games etc as long as i dont sleep and answer the phone when it rings and get the job done.

Left 4 Dead (2008)
low:
94.3 fps
high:
48.3 fps
[X] Intel Core 2 Duo T6500 2.1GHz 4096MB RAM
Mobility Radeon HD 4570 (680MHz), 512MB (800MHz) , 7.14.10.0643

from here: http://www.notebookcheck.net/AMD-ATI-Mobility-Radeon-HD-4570.13885.0.html

so you should be able to play it easily... And I am sure a bunch of articles, just read that page, or google hd4570...

I find it confusing you have the knowledge to overclock your PC and select some pretty good hardware, but are unable to determine if this laptop will do what you want it to?

I have never owned a laptop, or used one for longer than 10 min, and everyone i have used has been slow and painful. I just assumed that the all sucked badly, guess i will find out lol.

haha ok, my problem with gaming on a laptop was the thing overheating and throttling itself, making gaming real shitty. If I managed to keep it cool (good positioning, keeping it clean of dust), it did pretty good.

But currently I am not too upset with having only a desktop. My laptop pooped out on me after four years of being on 24/7 I don't blame it too much.

Its not like im going to do any mad gaming on it, not going to try and play crysis or anything. I am just curious how much it will handle, its main purpose will be media playback and old games/roms. If it can do L4D at 40+FPS high setting i will be super happy.

I am in a similar situation, I work in logistics, and my boss doesn't care how I pass the time so long as I don't bring out the laptop until after he has left.

It'll play your movies fine. The 4500MHD will play movies just fine and the 4570 is much better than the 4500MHD. As for what games can or can not work on that 4570 you'll need to look at the game's requirements. Another source, if you want to see actual video, is go to youtube and do searches there. I know if you do something like, 'gaming on a 4500MHD' you'll see a lot of videos of various games running on that IGP. Do the same for 4570 and you should get what you want.

Shift work jobs can be nice when it comes to down time. Some jobs have less active work than others. I have a SFF gaming rig for my night job. ;-)
