well, my desktop system just broke. i cant figure out whats wrong with it. so im thinking of just buying a new laptop to replace it. i figured itd save room that is a premium in my house right now. i already have one of the new IBM T42s, but thats primarily for my dad, and i dont like it that much. its the one that has a 1.7GHz pentium M, 60GB HD, 512MB DDR, etc.
anyway, the laptop is fine, but i want something more powerful as it will replace my desktop. thus, i will NOT be using it for much portability, i have the t42 for that. so battery life and weight is not a concern.
i really really like the new 15.4 widescreen laptops, i think they look pretty awesome and i went to the store today to look at some. specifically i saw 2 for the price of around $1000 that i found would suit my needs well. the Sony K33, and the HP zv5410us. the sony comes with a pentium 4 532 with hyperthreading and the 1MB cache. the HP has a Athlon 64 3000+.
both are pretty similar in other aspects. i couldnt tell which screen looked better, but i think both looked just amazing. a LOT better than the t42 (might be psychological, but it truthfully did look a lot sharper than my t42 thinkpad). the sony looked better (physically) although the HP looked pretty slick also. my only concern is that the K33 has a really crappy vid card while the HP has a geforce 4 440mx, also pretty crappy but at least its not shared memory. i wont be playing games at all on either (since it would suck, and i dont think a gaming notebook can be had at this price). will the video card affect me then? i will probably want to watch videos though....
are there any good desktop replacement laptops i should consider for around $1000? i wont be gaming with it. the occasional dvd, hmwrk, and the usual apps. portability is no issue. i figure i need a high powered system with decent reliability and expandibility if possible. EDIT: Forgot to mention i really want a quiet laptop if thats possible. one of the biggest things that bother me are loud systems. my desktop was really quiet, an antec sonata, vga silencer, zalman cnps7000cu, seagate 7200.7 and the works.averatec has a really well priced one, dunno about the company's reliability though, it has a radeon 9600 and a dvd burner too
