New laptop battery keeps machine from booting up into windows

My father in law has an old KDS AMD K6-2 350 laptop. The battery on it is pretty much dead, so he ordered a compatible Canon replacement batter from www.abatterypack.com. When he puts the new battery in and boots up, it will get to the windows logo (running 98SE), and then freezes and won't go any further. He can boot up in safe mode with no problems. If he takes out the new battery and puts in the original one, it boots into windows fine. I have no idea how a battery could cause windows to freeze on loading, but I'd appreciate any possible insight.

My initial reaction would be to RMA the battery and try another one, its charge/discharge circuitry may be defective or damaged, and windows doesnt like it. OR the battery may just be incompatible. Batteries are hot swappable, you can leave the machine on, while you remove the battery. Or turn the unit on on ac power only, and see if it boots, if it does, try adding the battery AFTER it boots. does the unit recognize the battery? or restart itself? or freeze? none of the above.... see what happens, maybe get a lil better idea of the problem
