New Laptop Advice: Which Asus G73?

Hello all!

My apartment was recently robbed, and they stole my ******* computer!

Anyway, it's time for me to try to find a new one and I'm going to get a laptop as a replacement for a desktop gaming computer (there are various reasons for this). I know all about how with laptops you get a lot less bang for your gaming buck, but right now the portability of the laptop makes it a must.

So, with that in mind, I have begun researching gaming laptops. I will either game on the laptop display itself, or buy a monitor if i want/need to. I will of course plug a KB/M into it. I am trying to keep the price at around $2k or less, since the less I spend on this, the more I have to replace the multitude of other things that were stolen. So far, it seems like the best bang for my gaming buck (sorry for using that stupid phrase again) is the ASUS G73 series. There are three flavors I have been looking at:

G73JW-XA1
G73JW-A1
G73JH-X1

Now, pros/cons, comparisons and the like:

(1) Video
JW = Nvidia 460m
JH = ATI mobility 5870

So, it comes down to the 5870 vs 460m. Which is better? I haven't been able to find a solid answer on this. It seems like, right now, the 5870 is the faster one, but people expect that as the 460m matures, it will outpace the 5870. Thoughts? Any other differences/advantages? Is the difference between them so small that it doesn't matter?

(2) Processor
G73JW-XA1 = i7-740QM (1.73GHz)
G73JW-A1 = i7-740QM (1.73GHz)
G73JH-X1 = i7-720QM (1.60GHz)

Doesn't look like much of a difference here, since all we're talking about here is a ~7.5% difference.

(3) RAM
they all have 8GB, but there is a difference in the operating frequency:
G73JW-XA1 = 1066Mhz
G73JW-A1 = 1333Mhz
G73JH-X1 = 1333Mhz

Does this really make a difference? I've read that the video card will be the bottleneck in this computer, so the RAM frequency difference won't matter. Thoughts?

(4) HDD
G73JW-XA1 = 750GB
G73JW-A1 = 2x500GB
G73JH-X1 = 500GB

I have external storage, so HDD size isn't a huge factor, but its still something to consider.

(5) Optical Drive
G73JW-XA1 = DVD-RW
G73JW-A1 = Blu-Ray
G73JH-X1 = DVD-RW

I don't buy Blu-Ray disks, so this isn't a big deal, but if I go on a long trip, it might be nice to have. Again, not a huge factor, but still something to consider.

(6) Model

JW vs JH

The JW is newer, and I have read that there were some cooling and GSOD issues that have been worked out in the JW. Other than that (and the various hardware inside them), I don't know of any difference between them... do you?

(7) Price

As you can see, I can get the JW-XA1 and the JH-X1 for $1450, and the JW-A1 for $1750 (all free shipping). Of course, lower is better. But, is $300 worth it? Well, I guess that depends on the answers to the questions above. Also, I will probably have to buy an extended warranty and possibly a monitor, so that's gonna tack on more, pushing me close to the $2k limit if I get the JW-A1

(8) Breakdown, Baby

To me, it seems like what it all boils down to is the video card. That will probably be the bottleneck in the system, and so I should probably get the better one. But, maybe I'm wrong. Or, maybe we just can't tell which is gonna be better in a month. Maybe Blu-Ray player is better than I thought for some reason. I've looked at Alienware, Falcon, Sager, Clevo and others, but the ASUS ones just seem to be the best hardware for the price. Who knows? You Do!

So, please tell me the answers to my questions above, and your thoughts on the 8 sections above. What would you get and why? Please help, as this is the first laptop I've bought for myself (and it has to be a gamer, at that).

People swear by the ATI 5870, but I'm an NVIDIA fanboy since there are some games that just run better on Nvidia cards (Crysis is like this.... maybe Crysis 2 as well?). I'm on the same boat as you, and after some research decided to go with the JW-A1. Everything else really won't make much of a difference, just go based on price concerns if that's your main worry. I will be ordering mine through powernotebooks.com since they would let me add a SSD to it. And you are right, these laptops seem to be the best out there in regards to price-performance.

Whoa, I just noticed that the G73JW-XA1 only comes with a 1-year warranty vs 2 year with with the other two.

The G73JW-A1 also comes with a razor mouse and backpack; does anyone know if the other two do?

UPDATE: I found this "incredible deal" at a website which seems to wholesale from China: http://www.alibaba.com/product-free/112242949/Asus_G73JW_A1_Notebook_i7_840QM.html

Standard G73Jw-A1, but with 840QM processor and 16GB RAM. Neither of those two "upgrades" seem to matter; 16GB RAM = overkill (8GB is overkill, unless for specific applications) and from what I can tell, the processor difference is slight as well. What IS important is the listed $450 price.

Very weary... anyone work with these guys before? My SCAM detector is way off the chart, but who knows, sometimes you get lucky.

Stay away from that overseas deal, definitely a scam. At a 6 quantity minimum it is probably out of your budget anyways.

The 460M and the 5870M are similar enough in performance that you can just choose based on which brand you prefer. I believe the 460M does run a bit cooler than the 5870M, but in a large chassis like the G73 it will not matter as much.

I'm talking to the people in Indonesia currently. I got this email from them:

"Dear, Mr User Usington

Thank you for your email
Asus G73JW-A1 Notebook i7-840QM 16GB
Yes, It is the specification of this laptop,
or we can upgraded to core i7 940XM (+41.00 US$)

Asus G73JW-A1 Notebook i7-840QM 16GB
The price: 430.00 US$
Shipping cost: 35.00 US$
Total cost for order 1 unit is: 465.00 US$

We really hope to hear from your shortly

Best regards
Tatat sidabutar

Email:urakarya@yahoo.com
"

Here is my reply:

"Dear Sidabutar,

Thank you very much for your reply. Is it possible to have the laptop's video card upgraded to an Nvidia 480m? If so, how does that effect the price of one (1) laptop?

Also, if the laptop is ordered with no upgrades, just as listed in the advert, is it new untouched in the box? I have never seen a model with 16GB of RAM and a i7-840QM processor. What about if I order upgrades? Are they upgrades that are already on the laptop as built by Asus, or are they after-market changes?

The reason I ask is because this would effect the warranty from Asus.

Someone over in another forum said they ordered a laptop from these guys. IDK if he actually did, since he didn't replay to my question about it in the thread or PM, but anyway, we'll see. I'll probably just end up buying the G73JH-X1 from Newegg or the G73JW-X1a with 3-year warranty from Amazon.

The 16Gb RAM model is 'an amazon exclusive model so you wont find it elsewhere', but it comes with less bandwidth memory (1066). This is actually invisible to me (average user) and it's not a bad option. I already ordered mine

by any chance, have you considered the asus g53? it has the same exact gpu/processor as the g73, a 15" screen, and is actually MUCH smaller/lighter. The g73 has a huge ugly bezel and extended area around the keyboard, while the 15" version actually looks classier and more refined and is in a more realistic weight to carry around.

Can you link me? I haven't seen a 16GB model on Amazon.

I didn't realize that the 15" had the same video card. I'll check it out, as 15" probably makes more sense. Like you said, more portability, and for now I want to hook it up to a 22" monitor for gaming anyway. Do you game on a 15" screen? Doesn't it seem, well, rather too small?

The G73 and the 5870 is one of the crappiest laptop computers ever. It has a nice screen and if you never intend to game, it's a good DTR.

I recommend doing a little research on Notebookreview.com forums.

I don't know about the GT 460 but I'd imagine that would be fine... get that version.

The JW is supposed to have revised/better cooling, not have the grey screen of death issues that the jh had (at least initially-may have been fixed with a BIOS update it sounds like), and I guess people like the track pad better too (though I never use them).

For me it's a no brainer-I just ordered the jw-AW a few days ago and it shipped today. I've always had issues with AMD drivers when I go with an AMD card, and I've never had issues with Nvidia's drivers...so even if they weren't comparable cards, I'd still go Nvidia when I can.

Just for clarity's sake, you mean G73JW-A1, correct?

Where did you order from, Amazon?
Or, did you order from some place like xoticpc so you could add upgrades, and if so, what did you get? Price?

Just curious.

i game on a 13.3" laptop outputed to a 22" monitor :p Best of both worlds, methinks, as it gives me the portability/battery life to carry around and big screen i need at home. It is a compromise on power though, the 3820tg i have only has a radeon 5650 graphics card.

By the way, this computer looks awesome and is a few pounds lighter:

I'm in a similar boat, torn between Asus G53 and G73 variants.

TigerDirect now carries the new XT1 Version, which is think is the best of both worlds G73s, compared to the Amazon XAW and A1 versions
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...&sku=A50-17326

The XT1 is $1499 and it has a Blu Ray player! 500GB Hard Drive, and 1333 mhz ram. Basically the same as A1 minus the bag and mouse, and with a smaller singular HD. Has the same limited 2 year warranty too.

Now I just need to figure out is the 17.3 inches too big? or is 15.6 inches too small...

That looks like a better one for me. With respect to the XA1, I don't need the BR player (i dont buy them), the downgrade from 750GB to 500Gb kinda sucks, and the ram is (4x2) instead of (2x4), but it DOES come with the two year warranty, which is attractive.

And What is your decision?? The best op for me is JW-XA1 (jejeje)

I actually haven't bought anything yet. The detective is still investigating the case, and while I HIGHLY doubt i will get my computer back, I don't want to spend the money on a new computer until I know i wont recover my old one.

Amazon for $1745 I think.

I'm torn...can't decide what the heck to do, open this or wait for Dell to update the M15/17x line or what :-/

Even got in my 160GB Intel SSD I'd use as the primary drive...if I keep it.

The JW version with the 460M runs significantly cooler than the JH with the ATI. The GPU is typically 20-25 C cooler in both idle and under load.

It also has one USB 3.0 port, better touchpad and a few other minor improvements.

The performance of the 2 video cards is basically a wash, but scalding hot notebooks suck. Get the cooler running one.

What updates do you think are coming to the M15/17 line? Adding the 480m to the lineup? Any idea of when they updates will happen?
