New King of the Gaming Os's

Hiya all,

Sorry to post such a remedial question, but my new machine is going together this weekend, and I need to know if Windows 2000 is gaming-friendly, or should I stick with win98 SE, or should I head over to Win ME?

Thanks in advance!!

I would either stick with Windows 98 or go to 2000. I would not go to Win ME.

I have changed over to Windows 2000 on my main/gaming machine and the only game that I have had problems running was The Sims. All of my other games work without any problems.

My system also is much more stable in 2000 and it actually seems faster.

Really? I was wondering how many of my older games would have to get tossed to the wayside.

How many people here are using 2000 as their gaming OS? DirectX does fine on it, OpenGL, etc?

Will it work with the latest hardware toys? (GEForce2 GTS DDR, Abit KX7 RAID, etc)

Thanx!

You won't have much trouble as far as the hardware goes. Some graphics cards run a little slower, but not buy a significant level unless it's a radeon. Some games just don't like nt though.

I would stick with 98se. Win me is ok, but it just has too many problems. And win 2000 isn't game friendly. It really strange though, because the games that dont run on win2k are different for everyone. When i was using win2k i could run the sims fine, quake 1 fine. I couldnt run q3 or ut though. But many of my friends who were also using win2k could run q3 and ut. Personally i would just stick with 98se.

With correct drivers and directX 8.0, I've had no problems with my favorite games in win2k. Hitman gave me some trouble before, but I downloaded dX8, and the latest v3 drivers... no more trouble... runs beautifully. Win2k is a really great OS for everything, in my opinion.

Fantastic! I'm not the gamer I used to be, so I think I'll format it at fat32 Windows 2000, and try a bunch of games on it right away. If things go too rough, even after the latest drivers, I can always bounce back to 98 SE without becoming too attached and comfortable to the new machine.

Thanks for the input all, feel free to keep it comin!

I used to dual boot win98 and nt4, I have run win2k now since it came out and no longer need to dual boot. The only game that wont work on my system so far is Mechawarrior 2 (my son wanted to play it.)and I can live with that. Unreal Tounament,Quake2&3(haven't tried Q1 yet), Deus Ex,Thief2, and all my other older games (no sound in Duke3D🙁 though)play great. I'm not so sure about DX8 though. I'm using Dx7 with no problems (I dont have hitman however). You should have far fewer problems setting up win2k, thats my experience anyway. Gaming OS...most definately IMHO! I haven't heard many good things about WinMe.

Yeh, Win ME has alot of problems. Like when i was running it, it worked fine for about 2 weeks, then one day everything decided to slow down. I mean everything! It took me 30 seconds to open a menu. I tried everything, but eventually went back to win98se. This is what i'm staying too, maybe not for too long. Gotta take a look at whistler when it's offically released.

If you have the time to download latest drivers, updates, and software from the 'Net, stick with Win2K.

Win2k is great. There are a few old games that I can not get to run like Command and Conquer, Red Alert, Rouge Spear. You might want to set up a dual boot just incase you still need to run something that Win2k will not run untill your comfortable of ridding yourself of Win98 for good.
