New Kindle or Nook?

A google search will turn up tons of results that lean towards there being a new version(s) of the Kindle or Nook released soon.

I really want an ebook reader but how soon would one expect the new Kindle? Should I buy the current one or wait?

Well they're not released yet so who knows. If you want to wait then wait, if you can't then you can't. If the specs aren't revealed yet then how do we know if they're even worth waiting for? There's things saying a smaller Kindle in August but who knows.

They cannot refresh ebook reader products too often, they're asking a hefty price tag for them. Most people aren't going to drop 250+ every 6 months to purchase a new device.

I like my current nook and intend on buying more ebooks for it.

If you want a cheap one, you should look into the Kobo, which is marketed by Borders. It has a 6" e-ink screen just like the Kindle and Nook but they skipped all the wireless connectivity to save money. It's a little less convenient in that you have to download the books on your computer and then sync over USB or Bluetooth, but it's a pretty major savings - it's only $150. It also has less internal memory but it has an SD slot so you're covered anyway.

Read a review of it and they said the on-screen interface is good although the physical controls aren't great, and other than that it's pretty much the same as the others.

Or one of the Sony readers.

Personally, I don't like that every major book dealer wants to market an ebook reader. They'd be better off letting Amazon and B&N do the hefty lifting with designing the hardware and distributing the device, then inking a deal to produce content for it.

Amazon tends to make Kindle announcements without many hints beforehand. Hard to say when we'll see a new one.

True from many manufacturers though. If you knew for certain a new Kindle was coming out in August, would you buy one today? It'd kill their sales until August. 😛

I was really excited for the Kobo, too, until I read MANY reviews claiming the physical button used to turn pages and stuff feels extremely cheap and uncomfortable.

The Nook seems like a great option but I know that a Nook 2 would have all the kinks worked out so I am tempted to wait and hope for a new one and the Kindle is great- but many articles point toward there being a new Kindle Lite, perhaps a touch-screen Kindle, or something else. Those changes are so big that if I knew when to expect one I'd probably wait... hmm... maybe I will just get a Kindle now and ebay it later.

I have a current generation nook. Its biggest problem? The availability of content. B&N is not a small operation by any means, but their ebook selection lags Amazon by a good amount. There are a number of IT related books I'd love to have that are available for the Kindle, but not for the nook. A shame.

I'm confused. You mean Borders should hire authors to write books? They're a bookstore, not a publishing company. And last I heard, Borders wasn't doing too well. The Kobo seems like a good strategy - good or bad, it's more than $100 cheaper than the Kindle and Nook, so there are bound to be some people interested in it.

Not what I meant. Designing, developing, and maintaining the hardware of the Kobo isn't going to come cheap, and its a given that its going to be in the 3rd/4th/5th place after the much more popular Kindle, nook, and Sony readers. That's not a good situation to be in. What I meant was that instead of wasting money on the Kobo, Borders should offer books for the Kindle, nook, and other readers, if possible. That way, they're able to see more books, people see more options for their favorite readers, and they in turn sell more reader devices.

after the nooks latest firmware update v.1.3 it worked out all the bugs. It's very solid e reader. I love mine. It also supports epub format which the Kindle does not so you have soo much more to choose from of where to purchase besides barnes and noble, though I love their e-book store.
