Hey I just built my computer today and need a little help. Every time I turn on the computer (from being off)it hangs at DETECTING IDE DEVICES... for up to a minute and then only finds the hard drive and CD-RW which are on the primary IDE chanel, it doesnt find the DVD and Zip on the secondary IDE. Even under windows there not there, but if I "restart" then it only takes 2 seconds DETECTING IDE DEVICES... and it finds all 4 devices on both IDE chanels and eveythings fine.Every time I restart works but every time starting from power off doesnt find them. Does anyone have any ideas?
Primary master-Maxtor UDMA100 30GB
Primary slave- HP CD-RW
Secondary master- Toshiba DVD
Secondary slave- Zip drive

Hi,

Set your primary slave, secondary master, and secondary slave to none in the auto detect portion of the bios. Also, set quick power on test to disable. Assuming you have the 1.8 bios. For some reason the restart with quick test enabled does not like other devices on the secondary channels.

Well all that is set it the bios, and I swaped cables just to make sure and it did the same thing. I just disconected the Zip and CD-Rw(both slaves and it booted up fine, it must have something to do with one of them🙂 I was hoping it wasnt the board!!! Well I'll mess with those 2 and see if I can get them working. Thanks for the help though.

Does your HP-CDRW support UDMA operation since it is on the primary channel? If it does not then you will have a problem with both drives as the hard drive will be operating in PIO mode.

Well it ended up being the Zip drive, with it unhooked everything works fine, whe I plug it back it I have the same problems. I mesed with jumpers and everything, and nothing worked, so I pulled it out, it was a carry over from my Dell and I really dont need it, just use the burner. Well thanks again for the replies, all seems good now🙂

Just for sh*ts and giggles, set the HP to master. Every HP burner I've had (and this makes three) has not liked being a slave. As soon as I stick it on master it was fine. You may just want to try it.

Also could be a power issue. If you've got a spare PSU then try using that to power your ZIP drive when booting from cold and seeing if you have the same problem
