new job: when is it appropriate to dress up?

ok so i finally found a new, permanent, full time job, to replace my tempo job with no benefits

i will go in next week to fill out the paper work. do you need to dress up for these kind of things or just pants and sneakers are enough?

how about the first day of work? i remember when i dressed up and i looked like a dork.

by dress up i mean shirt, tie, shoes, and dress pants. and the job is for a laboratory technician.

when in doubt, ask.

make a quick phone call, ask to be transferred to someone in your new department and just say "you know, I wasn't sure so I thought I'd ask- what's the dress code around there"

That said, I never go to work in sneakers. Kachis and button down shirts are my minimum dress for work.

Yeah I was the same way, even though it wasn't required, but this new job people show up wearing all kinds of crap, torn pants wife beaters, anything, so now I just wear nice jeans and a polo shirt and either Docs or tennis shoes. I was just too out of place before.
