New job offer, but would like to stay with current

I got a job offer for external IT support which is mainly over the phone support which sucks but it is for $16.83/hr and I have to go through about an hour of traffic every morning. Now my current job(14.25/hr) I am internal support so basically I browse the internet all day and chat to managers, plus it is about 10 minutes away. Now I want to stay at my current job, so should I mention the job offer from the other company and see if he will match it. I do know he has big plans coming up for me and the other IT guy, so he doesnt want us to go. Thanks guys, also my previous job I ran a business at home for a guy for 5 years while in college, so I am a bit new to this. BTW i have been working this company for 8 months now.

Only tell him about the new job offer if you're willing to leave. Otherwise, you're going to cause tension in the workplace if you wind up staying.

well if its the money important, here are some calculations i did based on gas:

assumptions:
car gets 20mpg on average
distance to possible job: 35 miles
distance to curret job: 7 miles
cost per gallon: $3
you work 40 hrs a week, 5 days a week, 50 weeks a year

50weeks * 40hrs/week * (16.83-14.25) = $5160 extra per year
((2*35miles - 2*7miles)/ 20mpg) * $3 per gallon *5days a week * 50 weeks per year =$2100 extra in gas
$5160 - $2100 = $3060 net

and in my opinion, phone support will equal $50k/year in therapy for dealing with stupid people, so my net would be -$46940

and yes, i am bored at work

if net > 0 .... take the job. and by his calculations, it's substantially greater. take it, luke.

Jeebus, all I do is play games.

Good math assuming assumptions are correct.

Thanks for the help guys, the only thing I am worried about is that the phone support stress may not be worth the money, at my current job it is internal so I just get emails and I walk about 20 feet to the call center and fix it myself.. Also the ride to the new job would be on one of the most busy highway's in Tampa, where there is guarenteed atleast one wreck every morning. So stop and go traffic would def be atleast an hour. BTW my car gets 30 mpg on the highway without stop and go 🙂

well if you want to average it on that then here you go, but even if your car gets 30mpg on the highway, i doubt you start at 55mph from home and the highway ends in the parking lot of your workplace.

assumptions:
car gets 30mpg on average
distance to possible job: 35 miles
distance to curret job: 7 miles
cost per gallon: $3
you work 40 hrs a week, 5 days a week, 50 weeks a year

50weeks * 40hrs/week * (16.83-14.25) = $5160 extra per year
((2*35miles - 2*7miles)/ 30mpg) * $3 per gallon *5days a week * 50 weeks per year =$1400 extra in gas
$5160 - $1400 = $3760 net

extra 700 with 30mpg instead of 20

and in my opinion, phone support will equal $50k/year in therapy for dealing with stupid people, so my net would be -$46240

$2 extra an hr you work 8hrs = $16 extra and you will be in traffic nearly 2hrs round trip EACH day = not worth it!

Wait until a year is up and then try and negociate with your boss. If your not happy don't be afraid to walk if you negociate.

Dude no offense but... 8 months into 1 job and you're already considering a job that pays just a tad more and is more of a hassle? Word of advice. Unless your job is from hell... stick with it for at least 1 year. If your boss likes you, that's even less reason to leave. If you stick with it for at least 1-2 years, you can leave with good future references to other jobs. Too many people go job hopping just cause they get offered like a couple thousand more a year and think that's big. Think big picture/long term. Unless you get a job offer that pays significantly more and/or has lots of opportunity to move up in the ranks, stick with your current job.

Ok guys thanks for your suggestion, I think I am going to stay with my current job until a year is up and see if I can get someone kinda raise. 🙂

Did you graduate college? If so, put that education to use and find a better paying job.
Oh and don't go back to phone support, no amount of money is worth it being stuck to a phone all day. Benn there, will never go back.
