There are some real life negative things about parts of the state, but mostly it's just a watered down societal meme, an <insert here> thing, like Polish jokes.

Nobody in current day America is hating on the Poles, or even thinking about them, when they tell a Polish joke.

That's true. When we're telling jokes about stupid people now we're thinking about people from New Jersey, not Poles. Or we're thinking about people from West Virginia, Alabama or California, a persons view of the biggest idiot states depends on where they live.
