So all the beaches and parks are free now, right? "Closed" means there's no one there to take your money, it's not like they're going to put up barbed wire around the beach, right?

~1-3%. Depends on the area. Also affected by high property values though - a house that would go for $100k-$200k in Podunk, IL might go for $500k-$1 million here. A property tax bill of $20-30k/year isn't that out of the ordinary.

Pretty much, I guess. I think at most of the beaches you're on the honor system anyway - you buy a beach badge and badge checkers occassionally come around and check your badges, but if you're in the water they're not going to chase you down. The beach I go to is free anyway.

Downside is there won't be any lifeguards, so if you get dragged out by the current you're pretty much dead.

Hrm. Okay. So when New Jersey decays into anarchy on just about August 1st, I just have to destroy all the bridges across the susquehanna to prevent the unwashed huns from penetrating my stronghold (they'll make their way into eastern PA much too quickly)

Go back to Maryland, you dirty hun.

We bought this house in July 2000. We paid for it in cash on the day of the closing. It was valued at $135,000 and I was paying just under $2,800 per year in property tax. there have been steady increases in this amount to the point where I am paying almost $5,000 per year on a house valued at $135k.

Nice increase.

So, the county decided that we were not paying enough in property taxes and sent the assesors around.

My house has just been valued at $300,000.

$300k for a 1,400 square foot house on a 37.5x100 lot!!!

Now, I gotta wonder... if i was paying almost $5k on $135k.... what in the world am I gonna be paying for $300k?

hi, u live in texas.

Reason Number 15435434 Why New Jersey Sucks: Its residents are such rabid defenders of an overall worthless state.

This story proves it, and you all know it. Admit it. It's OK. Your state only receives traffic because it has beaches and casinos. Period.

Actually I live in central PA now, but I did grow up in Texas.

I fail to see what that has to do with anything, though. New Jersey is the state in the news for having the government shut down, not Texas - or any other state for that matter.

Imagine that... a Democrat who wants to raise taxes.

As opposed to a Republican who wants to spend more and tax less?

Swing and a miss!

I'm a libertarian.

Thank you, come again.

So am I. 😉

pwned

LOL. Maybe if the libertarians would quit pwning each other and start pwning the 2 parties currently in power we could have a 3 party system ;-)

Burn!

Now THAT was pwned.
