New Iraqi channel launched to help fight propaganda
By Afkar Abdullah

11 November 2004

AJMAN ? The Iraqi satellite channel Al Fayhaa, launched in Ajman recently, aims at providing accurate, objective, timely and comprehensive news and information to help Iraqis learn how to use their new-found freedom as their country moves towards democracy.

?Since the fall of Saddam Hussain, it?s quite clear that the Iraqis are receiving Arabic propaganda led by giant satellite government and non-government TV stations, such as Al Jazeera,? Mohammed Al Tai, General Manager of the channel told Khaleej Times.

"These Arabic TV stations are broadcasting information which is both inflammatory and alarming, inciting hatred and violence among the Iraqis against the West and coalition forces. It?s a media battle and at this point the Iraqis are alone and unarmed because there is no independent TV station to broadcast material representing different points of view," he said.

He added that Al Fayha station aimed at supporting the Iraqi people in this media battle by providing accurate, objective news and information to help Iraqis learn how to use their new freedom to move towards democracy.

?Freedom of information is essential to promote democracy and keep a democratic system of government functioning,? he said. ?Providing freedom of information lies at the heart of the Al Fayhaa TV mission. An enormous responsibility comes with these challenges that we as journalists working for Al Fayhaa TV must shoulder. We have to do our job in such a way that we could win our audiences over from other TV stations and distinguish ourselves from the competitions,? he added.

According to Al Tai, Al Fayhaa station has two main theme ? the first is post-produced programmes which could be anything from documentary to factual programmes, fly-off-the wall and news features; the second is the daily live programmes including news bulletins, Press reviews and magazine clips. A ?Good morning Baghdad? is an example of such a show. The difference between the themes is that the first one is critical, format-based and regularly produced while the second is based on research and retain some creative elements. Thus Staffing and flow chart of production between the two themes are also different. Al Fayhaa TV is among the top Iraqi channels according to the Iraqi newspaper and web sites researches.

He pointed out that Al Fayhaa is being funded by Iraqi businessmen concerned about Iraqi people needing to learn about freedom and democracy. Some of its programmes are being broadcast from Dubai Medica City and some from the Ajman TV studios, he added.

Most of the new programmes to be broadcast soon will educate Iraqis about the elections, opinions, freedom and democracy specially since there are around 60 active political parties publishing 161 magazines and newspapers.

There is a special programme titled ?Behind the Bars? which will interview those Iraqi people who were tortured by Saddam Hussain to let them narrate their stories of suffering in the prisons. These people will also include women who were raped and abused by the sons of Saddam.

Other programme titled Iraqi Testimonies which will scandalise all of Saddam's 45,000 crimes in Abu Ghraib prisons that were not talked about in any kind of media. It will also show the Al Hillah great mass grave which contains about 11,251 dead bodies of children, women and men as well as the new 62 mass graves discovered recently in Karbilla and other southern areas.

The two hours ?Freedom Space? a programme which is being broadcast to communicate with people in various districts in Iraqi as well as the Iraqis around the world to express their view. As the channel is new, it is now working only for six hours. It's news and productions sections are under-formation.

Good stuff.

It was only a matter of time before democracy would flex its muscles.

Must have been like Canada over there, Captains of dissent, less the "educate" part.

After we have systematically denied them those very freedoms for generations.

I think Al Jazeera is a very respectable news site. Many of the articles are thought provoking and fairly balanced in writing (from the english website at least). I like their style more and they do run stories that wouldn't be very well received in America (like resource depletion).

I find the blind hatred of Al Jazeera funny. Alot of people eat up what the administration says about them without even examining their point of view. Read their site, see Control Room. How their concern for their fellow muslims being casualties of this war is viewed as propaganda beyond me.

No kidding. I really wish people would look at things themselves before jumping to silly conclusions.

Yeah. Kind of like the "blind hatred" of the KKK. I mean, their concern for their fellow WASPs is just so touching.

Bravo, that was one of the most ignorant replies I've ever seen on here. So you're saying that because Al Jazeera focuses on their fellow muslim's plight in Iraq you can say it's like the KKK being concerned about other WASP'S? The american media focuses more about our soldiers deaths then iraqi civilians, so I guess they're bad also eh? I take it you've don't know squat about them, and hence can spout vile hate for nothing you know about. Try educating yourself before inserting your foot in your mouth.

Maybe this channel can teach them to celebrate new found freedom and democracy the same way we did when our fledgling country began - by taking slaves.

Al Jazeera is a piece a shit, this is a channel that wants to provoke the Iraqi people by starting a civil war between Shiits and Sunnis.

Quite a few Iraqis realize how much BS Al-Jazeera spews. Here's a some quotes from a few Iraqis living in Iraq:

"Being out of the events? field for a week and having the media as the only source of information made me understand more why many people have a blurred vision about the situation in Iraq, I mean watching Al- Jazeera and the CNN for a relatively long time made Iraq- at certain moments-look like ?hell on earth?. Fortunately I lived my whole life in Iraq and when it comes to events taking place over there I can distinguish between the truth and the lies"

-Omar of Iraq the Model

"I have just been watching ?Al Jazeera? Television, although it is something very distasteful to me. They are at it again. When will people realize that this terrorist organ is a real menace and an enemy propaganda mouthpiece? There is no longer even pretence at neutrality and factual reporting."

-Alaa of The Mesopotamian

"All the Arabs need to go over their history, study their experiences and mistakes, and to learn from them, so as not to repeat them. They need to re-shape their lives and thoughts a new? in a way stronger, and smarter in facing the world?in addressing the world. A way from the chaos, wailing, and walloping.
Al-Jazeera station nourishes this dumb tide?the one that cries and wallops on the face? and who is Al-Jazeera station?? Where is its ?location???"

-A Family in Baghdad

"It is worth mentioning that some Arab channels, such as Al-Arabiya and Al-Hurra, had a much more balanced approach. True, they had their share of hosting conspiracy theorists in order to appear 'balanced', but overall they provided moderate discussions. Al-Arabiya, in particular, seems to have recently adopted a more professional tone. They have suddenly ceased to use terms such as 'martyr', 'resistance', 'fedayee operations' (used by Al-Jazeera to describe Palestinian suicide bombings), etc. They abandoned their former biased one-sided view which is of course an encouraging sign. I doubt Al-Jazeera will be following their steps any soon."

-Zeyad of Healing Iraq

Some of those people are also highly critical of US actions but realize how much propaganda comes out of Al-Jazeera.

Those are about the only Iraqi blogs that I could find that mention Al-Jazeera. The only ones that talked about it had a pretty negative view of it. I'm not saying that all Iraqis view it as wrong but there are quite a few that do.

And there are alot of people think Fox spews BS, and some think CBS spews BS. So I guess just from that alone we can come to an educated conclusion eh?

Those who have a positive opinion of it are probably in internment camps.

Grand. So there is a general consensus than. The Iraqi's are being empowered, a la west style. Al-Jazeera is the middle east's propaganda machine. CNN is the usa's propaganda machine. Than the usa got fox news for more propaganda goodness, and as a marvel of the times Iraq is now receiving their own second installment of propaganda rubbish. Grand indeed. Is there anything the usa can't get involved in and completely fubar ?
