New iPhone gets fingerprint-resistant coating

About Fucking time!

The iPhone 3G S promises faster hardware, a better camera, and an unannounced feature: a multitouch screen that repels skin oil. We discovered this new feature while browsing the iPhone How To--Cleaning iPhone, which reads:

To clean iPhone, unplug all cables and turn off iPhone (press and hold the Sleep/Wake button, then slide the onscreen slider). Then use a soft, slightly damp, lint-free cloth. Avoid getting moisture in openings. Don't use window cleaners, household cleaners, aerosol sprays, solvents, alcohol, ammonia, or abrasives to clean the iPhone. If your iPhone has an oleophobic coating on the screen (iPhone 3G S only), simply wipe your iPhone's screen with a soft, lint-free cloth to remove oil left by your hands and face.

Fingerprints on iPhone screens have been a source of consumer complaints since the release of the first iPhone in 2007. This new feature probably doesn't prevent fingerprints, but it likely makes the grease easier to wipe off. (If easier cleaning doesn't satisfy your need for neatness, try Phone Fingers.)

How many people here actually have screen protectors on their iPhones? I don't have one, and I'm pretty uhhh, well I just toss it in my pocket with whatever is in there, keys and change and crap. After a year the screen doesn't have a nick on it, not I can notice. Is it even possible to scratch the screen? On the flip side, my Blackberry got a gouge on the screen probably the 2nd time I put it in my pocket. Same pocket, same keys and other crap.

+1 for however Apple made the screen so scratch resistant.

my friend does the naked thing with his iphone, and his screen lamentably has a scratch on it now. i'd reject my phone right away if it got scratched on the screen. better to have a protector on it and be sure.

don't have a protector on my screen either. had the phone for a yeah now ... not a scratch .. in and out of my pocket with keys etc .. as posted above. All I use is a hard case for impact in case it takes a bounce .. which it hasn't.

Not a scratch on my screen either. I wish the backing and the chrome front was as resistant. It annoys me how easily that gets scratched.

I don't use a screen protector, but I have a Seidio face-in holster so it's pretty well protected

The shell of Tyranicus' iPhone is beat all to crap, but the screen is still completely scratch free. Optic quality glass wins the day. My latest dumbphone from verizon actually has a glass front screen (non-touch sadly) and it is also completely scratch free after about a year.

I picked up the new iPhone on launch day and I was very surprised to find out that this fingerprint resistant coating they have on the screen actually works.

It takes quite a while to put fingerprints on the screen and when they are on it is less noticable than in the current iPhone.

QFT. This is amazing.

I tried to put on a screen protector but simply couldn't get it to work. So i gave the rest of them to my wife who has my old iphone.

What happened when you tried to put it on?

Well, I'd be able to get most of it, but one edge would refuse to lay down. I could squeegee the air out over and over and it would just keep poping back up. I'm not stranger to putting these things on, I've done at least a dozen of them, but I could not get the 2 I tried to laydown and work on the GS.
