My girlfriend just got a new iPhone and she's having some problems.

She can't send texts and Facetime doesn't connect (yes she's on wifi). Under the Facetime settings, it says "waiting for activation".

She can use 3G for data and she can make phone calls. She's plugged the phone into the computer and registered in iTunes.

Any guesses as to what is going on?

Brand new vanilla phone with no jailbreak or anything?

Either way, first thing to try is go to settings > general > Reset > Reset Network Settings

If that doesn't work then reset the whole phone back to stock and reactivate it.

If THAT doesn't work, swap out the phone as it may be defective?

Yeah, its brand new iPhone out of the box. No jailbreak.

Reset Network Settings got rid of the "Waiting for Activation" under the Facetime settings, but texting and Facetime still do not work.

She's restoring the phone now.

She was so excited earlier today and now she is so disappointed, lol.

Yup, sounds DOA to me unfortunately :(

Better to find out now before she put a ton of stuff on it, as restoring old apps and stuff can be a pain of you have a lot.

1) Are you sure WiFi is turned on?
2) You said you can browse the web via 3G, can you do the same over WiFi?
3) Try opening up the following ports on your firewall if you have a firewall

TCP/IP
53
80 (normally open anyway for web)
443
4080
5223

UDP
16393-16472

None of which explains her texting problems.

Just have her call the carrier and make sure those features are enabled/not prevented by some Parental Control system at the carrier end, for example.

Her wifi is on, but the behavior is weird. She can use Safari to browse and pages load really fast. But it takes about 20 minutes to download a 2MB app. Using any apps which require internet is slow too. On 3G, everything is fast.

Lol, I'm not telling my girlfriend to go messing around with ports on the router.

She's taking the phone to AT&T today to see whats going on.

She went to AT&T. The guy screwed up her plan and everything is working fine now.
