new iphone 3G activation?

I just got an unlocked Iphone 3G online from the Apple HK store online. However, I am only going to test it out for a week or so - it's actually for my brother in law 🙂

I just want to sync over some of my contacts/music etc.... do I have to activate it thru itunes? If so, I've plugged it in and iTunes is asking me to sign in to my account. If I do that, will my account be forever linked to this iphone 3g? Or can he "re-activate" with his own iTunes account once I give it to him in Canada?

Also I assume it's easy to do a "hard reset" of the phone once I am done playing with it. I don't have a clue as I am coming from the Windows Mobile world!

He can re-activate it with his own SIM card. However, I do not know if you sign a 2 year commitment with AT&T by activating it with your SIM card.

I know that for iPhones purchased in the US, each time you put in a new SIM and activate, you are tied to a 2 year commitment; not sure about how it works with an unlocked iphone.

Being that you're in China and it's an unlocked phone, I believe that you should be fine. As long as your carrier doesn't have a stipulation in place that will limit your swap.

OK thanks, I managed to skip the registration screen(s) and have synced my stuff over. I'll do a system restore and let him register it in Canada when I finally let this iphone go :brokenheart:

The battery doesn't seem to be charging properly with my ipod nano 3g cable. Do I need to use the cable that came with the iphone? Right now it charges for say 5 mins and then stops - according to both itunes and the indicator at the top right of the screen. The batt is stuck at ~25%.

(It just stopped charging again!)

edit - wonder if it has to do with my USB port(s) on the front of my PC. I plugged the same cable into the wall AC adapter and it's charging now.

edit2- really missing the hardware keyboard on my HTC TyTN 2 now (aka AT&T Tilt)
