Apple made a huge improvement in the display and the display has to draw more power. The uP and GPU have a lot more work to do to drive the display and that draws more power. Add that up and the iPad3 is going to draw a good deal more power and therefore produce a good deal more heat. The larger battery is confirmation of this.

Apple has not revoked the laws of thermodynamics -- at least not yet. But, I'm sure there lawyers are working on it!

It does run warmer than previous iPads. That being said, is it enough to make me uncomfortable? I don't think so.

You can always return it and get a Galaxy Tab lol.

So, you claim in another thread that you're not an iFan, then you post crap like this, taking gratuitous potshots at Android devices.

It's interesting that my 2600k desktop runs cooler than the new Ipad 3 in most situations.

Or I can get a laptop that doesn't have heat issues for the same price and actually get work done on it?

Apple brute forced it this round. Huge backlight, huge chip, huge battery. All that power has to dissipate somewhere. It is what it is.

Why do you ask rhetorical questions? You would never get an iPad in the first place.

Edit: And by heat issues are you saying that laptops never get hot? I run flash on a windows PC and it burns up.

The ipad's heatsink is called your lap.
<br />

and a laptop doesnt sit on your, errrr, lap either? You cant run Mass Effect 3 or World of Warcraft on a laptop and claim it doesn't get hot. That is a straight up lie.

Pretty sure you used to criticise laptops for this issue.

Cnet didn't get temps anywhere near that. I'd be interested in Consumer Report testing methodology, and if the linked article has taken something out of context.

Edit:
CR test was performed while attached to Smart Pad cover. That's the iPad temp, not the cover temp (the part you would be holding).

Disclosing that info wouldn't make for a sensationalist headline though.

Not really since your processor isn't cramped into 9mm shell and probably has a heatsink and fan to cool it.

Well running Dues Ex HR last night my processor ran at 42 C which is less than the 46 C the Ipad runs at running it's games. And you're right, I would never cram something that runs so hot into a 9mm shell without proper cooling, but Apple did. :hmm:

Why is this a big deal? 116F isn't that bad.

Next weeks headline: new "summer day air" hits 116F. Everyone panic!

I was idly thinking of selling my iPad 2 when the iPad 3 refurbs came out, but now I think I wait for the 4th gen.

116F isn't actually that bad. Desktop CPUs can get that hot.

True, but you're not holding the desktop CPU in your hand either. :p I am reasonably sure my MB Air is getting warmer than that though, when its playing HD video. There's not a lot of ventilation and Apple's always cut corners with cooling across most of their product lines.

With the stock cooler, my SnB i5 doesn't get that hot until its under a decent load. It idles only slightly above room temp, around 74F.
