Iomega will be releasing a 750 Meg Zip drive soon. It will be a USB 2.0 drive. I think that they are wasting their time with this since CD-RW drives will be cheaper and so will blank CDRs compared to the price of one of the 750 Zip discs.

Hey I think I posted this around 3 months ago. This is why they have coupons on many of their Zip drives to clear stock.

Yeah, oh well :), but you did not state as to if it would be capable of using Zip 100 or 250 discs. I know that it will be able to read the 100's but not write to them. If it can read the 100's then it should be able to read the 250's, just not sure if it will write to the 250's -- probably not. I hear that they are noisey and will require an external power supply (will not be powered from the USB port).

I believe it very much depends on the user. For certain people who don't have to carry a lot of stuff with them CD-RW are the way to go, but for people who're already carrying laptop, as well as all the peripherals for it, this new ZIP drive might way more convinient. No need for special software, all-OS compatible and simple to use.

Plus, portability, ease of installation onto another system for transfer of data...

And another thing - we don't know how fast these things are going to be; USB2 gives a fair bit of bandwith to play with, so if it's faster than writing even plain CDR-media (which isn't exactly hard taking into account the time it takes to do lead-in/out and finalize), then I can see potential customers for sure...

Just my 0.02.

Audrey that is a good point, but what about the people who buy their laptops w/ CDRW drives already built in? With laptops becoming more powerful and becoming true desktop replacements, I feel that the zip 750 a bit of too little too late. Just my opinion.

I've had a chance to play with one of the new Iomega ZIP Ultra 750 and I have to admit is that it is a pretty nice drive. In certain cases it is more convinient than regular CD-RW, since there is no software needed just to get basic operation of the drive. ZIP disks also can be protected by password, while CDs can't.

As far as compatibility, 100MB ZIP disks are supported only in read-only format, while 250MB and 750MB are in read-write mode.

Iomega ZIP Ultra will come in two flavors, USB 2.0 (compatible with USB 1.x as well) and Firewire. Both will require an external power supply.
