New Intel i5 rig - High CPU temps!

Hey Guys, I am having some issues with my new i5 rig. The system is rock solid in use (2+ weeks) but when i do stress testing, a couple of apps make it run really really hot.

My rig is:
i5 - 750
EVGA P55 SLI mobo
Stock Intel Cooler
G Skill ram
Sapphire 5770
NZXT M59,etc etc.

So, when I run prime 95, the tests have made the cpus hit up to 83 Celsius after 1 or 2 minutes of testing, before I stopped it. Is that abnormally high for the stock cooler??
Also, when running Crysis Warhead, the game runs fine but the temps hit 72 Celsius or so occasionally...

The system has not had any major crashes or any weird instability but I haven't tried any overclocking at all. Other games and apps run at normal temps...
I have reset the cooler again to ensure it is getting an appropriate amount of contact. Is there something I am doing wrong with the cooler? are these temps normal?

any help would be appreciated!
thanks

I believe that is well within specs and yes, the stock cooler will run considerably hotter for Intel CPUs.

Some would consider them normal....I'd say too high.

I'd suggest changing to a better cooler as the stock ones suck.

If you plan to overclock a new cooler is a must as your temps are already on the high side.

65 is my comfort temp.

Buy a cheap cooler off Newegg. Should be between $15 and $20 for one that will drop and let you OC.

You should try LinX, that will make your temps go higher than Prime95. Get a good aftermarket cooler, I think your board should support 775 HSFs so if you have one around you could reuse it, and then you can overclock. I'm OCing my i5-750 and my temps stay below 63.

I don't plan on oc'ing for awhile and the reason i am concerned is from what i have read other people have been able to run there i5 prime 95 stress tests without reaching such high temps. thats why I think something might be wrong.

I also actually wanted to stick with the stock cooler since I am not overclocking anytime soon.

Well, yeah. He's just asking if it's normal. It is. It's within spec so it won't harm his processor. It's not like he's going to be running prime95 all the time. His temps are fine. If he wants quieter or cooler or plans on o/c then yeah get the better aftermarket hsf.

83 is normal, this article, http://www.hardwarecanucks.com/foru...e-i5-750-core-i7-870-processor-review-20.html, shows a stock i5-750 at stock speeds getting temps as high as yours:

Just realize you could get an aftermarket cooler and dramatically lower your temps. Heck I'm overclocking and I get lower temps than you. If you want to stay at stock speeds with your stock cooler, you could try undervolting your CPU by lowering the VCore, that will lower temps.

So how do you like the EVGA P55 SLI mobo? I got one but just gotta figure out which cpu I wanna get for it.

By the way those temps are what my Q9550 would do with the stock cooler overclocked to 3.6ghz.

Seems kinda strange the i5's stock cooler would suck that bad at stock speeds.

Hm. Thermal specification is 72.7C. So you're OK in Crysis. Not ok with the Prime95.
I find it odd they've packaged a cooler that can't keep within the requirements.

It probably won't fail within 3 years, if it does you can send it back for another.

The focus on temperature is occasionally overrated - remember, the ambient temperature of your room has a degree of input on your resulting temps, as do the idiosyncrasies of that particular chip. But given that your rig is stable, I wouldn't be overly concerned. I have an E8500 that touches 75c under Prime 95 in a 20c room, but it's the highest and most stable overclock I've ever messed with. As long as you're substantially under the TJMAX, it's not worth freaking out over.

That said, I simply don't trust Intel's stock cooler and I would recommend a mid-level investment in an aftermarket solution. And once you have it, I'd bet that while your temps will be lower, they will not be as low as others will report.

It should be said the Intel cooler included with the i5-6xx (and i3) is more than adequate and quiet while being smaller than the one included with the i5-750 (which of course is 45nm quad-core vs 32nm dual-core).

the intel stock coolers are not too great, amd ones even worse. I say save some cash get a aftermarket like hyper 212+ for 30 or so, worth it.
