New Intel 2.4c / winxp system with some wierd problems...

Hi,

I just upgraded my sisters computer to a Intel 2.4c, 512mb ram, msi 865pe neo2 mobo and have some strange problems

First, it has trouble remembering that it has detected and installed the modem.
What i mean is, if i connect the modem to the comp and boot up, it will detect and install the modem just fine. And it works great. However if i reboot once or twice, the modem simply "disapears" from the device manager and also all the dialup sections (although as windows is starting up the modems lights blink as if windows is communicating with it just fine.) The only way to fix this is to turn the modem off and on again and either go through add hardware or reboot again.
Its a Mitsubishi Diamond Voice 56SE with the latest drivers (got them from Windows update site and also Mitsubishis site)
Weird thing is, the diamond voice works fine on my AMD/Winxp system, and my sportster works fine on the Intel system. However due to various reasons, i need the diamond working on the Intel system ><

Next up is the scanner. Its quite an old thing, but it worked fine and got detected in windows 98. WinXP totally ignores it and i cant find any drivers for it. I thinks its an ACER, and its called Veugo or some such. Is there anything special that has to be done in XP to get it to detect scanners?

And finally, i set up a basic lan - directly connecting the computers together. However if its enabled, windows startup takes forever. Its like it spends a few minutes establishing that it is in fact connected to a lan - and in this time its almost impossible to use the computers (this happens on both the intel and amd boxes)
Are there any settings or whatever that i might have missed? It seems a bit rediculous that the network connection slows down booting by so much.

Sorry for the long winded post. Really appreciate any help.

What COM Port are you setting the modem to?
Make sure that if it is COM 2 that it is enabled in the BIOS
(by default most Com 2 ports are disabled)
Windows will still detect the COM port, but will be flakely.

The scanner being of the SCSI variety, all that is required is that
the SCSI card detects it in the chain (properly terminated) and
that you have the TWAIN drivers installed.

With the lan problem, check to make sure that both computers are
set to (depending on the LAN CARD) to 10 or 100 mbit, FULL Duplex,
and not AUTO.
