New install of Haf Life- Screen all garbled? Cant read bitmaps

I just installed Half Life and updates. I run it and it shows the Sierra splash screen ok, and then the menu (new game etc.) but everything around it is all messed up like the frequency of the monitor is all wrong. I also get "cant open bit map" warnings always. An example is cant open bitmap 'gfx/shell/splash.bmp.' Any ideas? Thanks
