new IMac, what do you think?

what do you guys think about the iMac, please don't flame just cause your a PC user and dont like mac. i myself is a PC user, but being in the grahpic design field, Mac's are a must.
 
You'd might as well stick to a real G5 setup if you want performance, all of the PowerMacs are dual G5s and would actually offer substantial performance for any Apple specific computing needs, ie your graphics design. Otherwise iMacs are dumbed down to the extreme in order to appeal to users who want as little complication and fuss as possible with the "all in one" design (not including keyboard and mouse obviously)

what if someone wants a G5 for less demanding tasks and doesnt want to pay the premium for a dual setup?

Well if they really want a G5 they can have it, new look, same old iMac.
 
I have a G4 powerbook (that i'm on right now actually), but I have always built/bought PC desktops. I love Macintosh's because they have intelligent designs, a great OS, and often high style. The problems with the iMac are as follows:

3 years down the road when you want a new Mac, you're forced to throw away (or stop using) a perfectly good 17" or 20" LCD!

The graphics card is not upgradeable and is some pathetic fx5200 or something

the system bus is crippled down to 600mHz or something

.... However, for someone like a technophobe, or a non-tech-savy relative that doesn't mind those faults, the iMac is an excellent, excellent choice for these reasons:

Very minimalistic, edgy design
Space saver
Relatively speedy for general chores
Easy to use
not horrible price (considering it's a mac and comes with excellent software)

....

All these things said, it's pretty clear upfront that tinkerers and high performance buffs will not like the iMac. And unless you get a great deal from your College, the PowerMac G5's are too expensive to be an easy alternative to recommend.

how do you like your powerbook G4? i was about to get one last year and i should of, but being a dumbass i waited, hoping maybe a powerbook g5 would come out, but i doubt it. and the price of the g4 is still more than the new iMac. Are the iMac's speed gimped so much with the 600bus? i have no clue, i been a PC user all my life. im guessing that the iMac are like Celeron's or somthing.

 
I like it a lot, and then not. Let me explain:
If it came with 1GB RAM, I may actually have bought one.
512MB RAM, well if I had some spare 'cash' and were in a shopping mood, maybe.
256MB! - No way! Ever!
...The FX5200ultra, I can live with.

I love my powerbook. The engineering simplicity and the OS are what make the laptop -- not performance. Since i have my PC for gaming and encoding, i use my powerbook for mobile work, internet, watching divx's on my tv, music, etc. It excels at what i use it for. Battery life could be better, but i can easily watch a divx on the plane and have 1.5 hours left if needed.

The power cord is awesome. It converts into a portable adaptor since the powerbrick (which is small, light and white) can plug directly into the wall. The latch magnetically pops out when you lower the screen. The keyboard is HANDS DOWN the best portable keyboard i have ever used. what else. The utilities for searching for and joining wireless networks are very easy to use and effective. Networking to my PC over my network is as easy as creating a new network place in windows using the FTP address that my powerbook creates in the sharing tab of the control panel ("system preferences")

i could go on and on about features in my powerbook that make it a pleasure to own. i have played UT2004 on it, and it was playable at 480x600 on my TV, which was nice to do, but not very exciting. Oh ya -- the detection for connecting to TV's or external monitors is amazing --- you just plug it in and it works. No going to display properties. Not that I don't have the technical knowledge to do those things, but why should i have to? anyway ... the clincher for me was how you can press f9 and all the windows tile up on the desktop or f11 and they all sweep off the screen so you can see your desktop. It's smooth.

anyhoo, i don't know if i would buy a G4 if it was my sole computer, but as my portable work/entertainment computer, i have never regretted buying it even though at the time i could have gotten a pentium M with better battery life and performance. Those things, amazingly enough, don't matter depending on what you will be using your computer for.

Oh, I'm sorry. I got the impression somewhere, during my initial checkout, that RAM wasn't possible to upgrade? If it is, then it's an entirely different thing.

I'm guessing pretty poorly, though, I'm sure Jobs didn't have gaming in mind when the design of the new G5 iMac was brought up. I believe iMacs are for basic functionality: surfing, burning CD/DVDs, e-mail, word processing, and light graphic design. Heavier tasks, such as gaming, rendering, etc, are left for the Powerbooks and towers.

As for the G5 iMac, I really don't like the design of it at all. The G4 iMacs look better, IMHO. However, knowing there's a G5 processor in there is very very appealing, not to forget a nice 17" display! 😀
