Well, 3rd party RAM is cheap. It's just standard DDR400 up to 2 GB.

Anyways, I've decided. I'm gonna get a current 17" 1.8 GHz for our departmental conference room, mounted on the wall, and I'm gonna get a 20" rev. B (2.2 GHz?) for myself in 2005, also mounted on the wall. 🙂

This is all very disappointing. 🙁 Even the promo video sucks big donkey balls.

Compare that to the original flat-panel iMac and it just lacks class. Guess they couldn't get Seal, Annie Leibovitz and Coppola to like it as much as the previous. Are you guys all liking this better than the original flat-panel? Only a couple of people here so far share my opinion about this one being not on par to the previous design. :\

If you buy one from MacMall instead of Apple, they will double your RAM for free. After rebate and a $39 installation fee, of course. The net cost of $39 for 256MB of PC3200 is a bit high, but it might be worth paying them to upgrade the RAM if it is a PITA to pry off the back panel off the machine in order to get at the RAM slots.

My wife wants one once her student loans come in, and the 20in model is actually a pretty nice deal for under $1900. Especially compared to paying $3300 to get an entry level PowerMac G5 and 20in Cinema display. It's a bit higher than what I'd pay for a comparable PC and LCD, but the ability to run OS X (and Office 2004) is worth it.

The original design was kinda cute at first, but the more I looked at it, the less I liked it. The large base just ate up too much room on the desk, and the tray-loading optical drive was a step back from the slot-loading drive of the G3 iMacs.

I like the sleekness and simplicity of the new model. They are right with drawing parallels between it an the iPod. Both a very clean designs - all you need is right there and nothing else is tacked on to clutter it up. The new design struck me as a bit dull at first glance, but it grows on you (especially when you look at the real-world photos instead of the website graphics).

I just wish Logitech would make a version of the MX Duo that matches the iMac's white color scheme and adds a dedicated eject button, so I could kick the Apple mouse/keyboard to the curb and not throw off the color scheme.

I like the new design. I prefer the old design out of the box in terms of ergonomics, but I love the VESA mountability of the new design.

On a side note - how do I decompress (or whatever) HQX files in Windows?
Just remove the .hqx suffix. You're downloading tiffs right? If so, once you remove the .hqx it's fine.

You'll see ram slots like that in a lot of 1U rackmount servers.

Looking at that iMac front it looks like it could accomodate a jog dial for various things. Turn it into some sort of Media Center or LCD-TV-able computer. Would be nice as an added value and with 20" it'll be a decently sized TV (well not a home theater or anything but still).

Add to that the bluetooth option and maybe bluetooth capability in an iPod or something to control it wirelessly seems like a pretty neat idea to me. 🙂
