New IBM computer chip mimics the human brain

IBM on Thursday announced it has created a chip designed to imitate the human brain's ability to understand its surroundings, act on things that happen around it and make sense of complex data.

So how exactly do they differ from say a single, dual or quad core processor? Even, though they are just designed to calculate instructions similar to the human brain.... they are still calculators. Code, algorithms, etc. will still need to be written, compiled & executed.

Any specific piece of hardware these were designed for?
