I just got my 2 40 gig IBM 60GXP from Newegg, and I am installing it on a Epox MB... anyways, they both seem to be defective as I get hard drive failure when I try and boot up... It seems peculiar that both drives would do this... but it did... I went onto to test it on a nother system with a KA-266 MB, failure still, and then tested it on my old bh6 system.. same thing. ALl thsi was done with different iedie cables so I know it's not the cables... Could it be that I got 2 non working drive or is there some kinda magic button I am suppose to push before this works... note I also bought a 60gig IBm 60gxp from newegg, and it works perfectly...

should i RMA?

very fishy.

Was box damaged in any way? Do you hear them spin up? What happens?

Details, details ;)

Have you tried to use IBM diagnostic tools and test the drives and maybe low level reformat them?

If they shipped in the same box, obviously something hardcore happened to the package. RMA.

They don't boot up period...

It gets to that screen with the "press del for bios" thing and it's detecting drives...

well it detects it as these weird symbols, like ascii symbols( ok i guess this forum doesn't liek those symbols), and as it continues to detect, after it's done scannign all the drives, it says "hard drive failure",

and I as I said, I tried just indivudually connection these drives on each seperate channel using both master and slave settings, cable select, you name it... and I ddi this for 3 systems.. well on teh 3rd system I was gettting tired and just connected it for one try...

This is no joke.

My 40 gig 60 GXP did the same thing. It gave me weird symbols etc. I was mad and left it plugged in, and was messing with some fans. The + and grnd. wires both touched the HD, and shocked it with LOTS of electricity. Sparks all over, comp shuts down. I reset PSU, and it boots back up. For the last 3 months, drive has been perfect. LOL.
