Dear experts,
I am a photographer (still resisting to the MAC mania) and work mostly with Photoshop CS5 (tons of plugins) on big files (from 100 Mb to 500 Mb with all the layers). I use on a daily basis Capture One, Lightroom and dedicated print softwares. In addition, I do some audio (in particular audio conversion (Flac) and storage), and the usuals (Office).
I built 5 years ago a workstation based on a dual Xenon 5130 and Supermicro MB with a Raid 0 2x VelociRaptor (2009 upgrade) plus other HDs (2) for storage with XP Pro 64 bit. I recently upgrade my video card to a PNY Quadro 600 to get the 10-bit display on my Eizo ColorEdge CG243W. It seems that my Raid 0 is out (no boot possible) and I want to upgrade my workstation to something simplier, more efficient and quickier.
1. My PC will be used for: PS CS5, Capture One v6, Lightroom V3, many plug ins related to photos, MS Office, some videos works (Adobe Premiere)
2. What YOUR budget is: 1,500 US $
3. My country is France and I will buy from French online retailers (materiel.net)
4. Always be a Intel Fan and nVidia for the graphics
5. I am ready to overclock as long as it speeds up my workflows (in particular while converting raw files into tiff): if it is possible to increase the CPU with no difficulty, let's do it! It seems that with the K version of the i7 plus the Asus Sabertooth it is quite basic.
6. my suggestion :
What I would buy:
- Intel Core i7 2600K
- Noctua NH-C14
- Asus SABERTOOTH P67 Rev 3.0 (Revision B3)
- G.Skill Kit Extreme3 2 x 4 Go PC12800 Ripjaws X CAS7
- SSD : Intel 510 - 120 Go
- Western Digital Caviar Black SATA Revision 3.0 - 1 To - 64 Mo
- Microsoft Windows 7 Pro 64 bits (oem)
- Seasonic X-Series - 660W
What I will take from my old configuration:
- video card : PNY Quadro 600
- DVD drive : Plextor PX 760SA (Sata)
- the case : Lian Li (a big one in which the Supermicro MB Extented ATX fits)
- one of the VelociRaptor (for the Photoshop dedicated swap file)
- the other Sata HDs (on which all my data are stored)
- screens : Eizo ColorEdge CG243W (on the display port) and an old Eizo 19' Flexscan.
I am worried about what I heard on how to set up the bios with respect to P67 and the Intel SSD I/O issue. Is there something specific to take into consideration?
Thank you very much for your advise.
Cheers,
Ruudi
