This machine will be used for gaming, simulation (mostly based in Matlab).

It will be primarily a Fedora 11 system, with Win7 for gaming/anything not available in Linux.

I plan to drive a 1080 LCD TV with it eventually, but for the moment it will drive a 19" Hyundai L90D+.

Parts:
Antec P183
Antex CP-850
Asus P6T-V2
Intel Core i7 920
OCZ 6 gb (3x2) RAM
nVidia GTX 275
WD 1tb Cavier Black
LG Blu-Ray/ DVD burner with Lightscribe
Xigmatek cpu cooler
... and a tube of artic silver 5.

I have numerous hard drives that might find there way into this machine at some point, and as it gets older another gtx 275 could be added.

I'll probably clock it to 3.33 ghz when I build it, hence the cooler.

not my first built. I've put two Athlon XP systems together back when that was current hardware, and one Athlon 64 system, not including a number of rebuilds/modifications of other systems.

My best suggestion would be a ssd. I just got a ocz vertex in my rig and love it. It increased my computer speed more than any single thing I've ever put into a computer. Feels like I put in a 5ghz core i7 with ram clocked to 2300mhz.

Never understood linux. What do you get out of it thats not in windows? Not dissing it just don't see the point. I'm not one of those windows v mac v linux guys so lets not go there.

I've been doing some programming on a single board ARM9 computer that runs a variant of Debian. I decided to start using Linux on my desktop just to become more familiar with it to help me with that project. I grew to like it, so I'm working on migrating most of my stuff over.

I have no illusions about Linux becoming prevalent anytime soon, but I prefer it to windows and mac so it's what I use.

fwiw I've had a great experience with Vista on my laptop.

As for ssds, I want to wait a bit before making that jump. I feel like the drives don't offer the features I want at a price I want to pay yet, but they probably will soon.
