As of 2 days ago I installed a i7 2600k into an Asus p8p67 and now I'm facing a problem where it's getting very warm. At idle now we are looking at around 45C and running something intensive such as Prime95 runs it to 80-90C range, really starting to freak me out. The cooler is the stock one with Arctic Silver 5 applied. Any idea as to why it would be getting this high?

Stock speeds? Stock voltages?

Temps seem a bit warm, but as long as it isn't unstable or throttling you should be fine. You should also check to see if it is mounted correctly. Typically one push pin won't be inserted properly (as in bottomed out before the pin goes through the motherboard).

I assume that's stock voltages, not sure, it's set to auto mostly except for the ram, couldn't get that to run at the proper speed without hard setting that. If that's 2600k vcore is not right I can correct

saw a bunch of reviews on newegg of people getting 40's on idle and way higher on load so sounds pretty common, I'm going to order a different fan heatsink just in case

OP, Im in same boat...stock cooler for now with AS5
Its looking better now at 32c at idle, Just ran Prime95 and HW monitor claims temp went up to 89-92, ASRock Util says 97c, noticed the speed started to drop too!

I would start with Zap's Post to make sure you have seated the H/S correctly. Also, when you applied the Thermal paste, how much did you apply? A small dollop is plenty and it varies of which way to apply. To much isn't very good. Me personally, I use a small amount and spread it completely over the CPU with plastic on my finger. Piece of mind for my benefit only. The plastic is so I don't have to wash my finger afterwords.

As for coolers, I use the Cooler Master H70 on both of my 2600k's, it has 2 fans push/pull and it does a pretty good job. right now I am at 4.4Ghz and my temps are hovering around the 60c +/- 2 range.

Start looking for a better H/S. Your voltages are low @ idol and seem in line, so the heat isn't being transferred and being removed very well. Have you left the side off the case to see if the temps drop. If so, you might want to check your airflow. If not well, get your self a much better H/S. Those temps wouldn't fly with me. Low to mid 30's would be much better, especially with the stock H/S.

Hi,

Can you please confirm that the i7 2600k stock cooler is the tower version like this one?
http://images.anandtech.com/reviews/cpu/intel/sandybridge/review/_DSC7051sm.jpg

In case you know, what is the stock cooler of a i5-2500K ?

Thanks

That is NOT the stock cooler for the 2500K or the 2600K. I think the Tower Cooler was given to reviewers in case they wanted to use it for Overclocking, temp comparisons etc.

Stock cooler looks like this for both CPUs => http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showpost.php?p=18597716&postcount=7

Some of your other temps are high as well. What case are you using? What is your case fan setup? As suggested, take off the side of the case, if temps drop by 10c or more you need to increase airflow either by turning your fans up, adding fans, or just getting a new case.

I had exactly same problem until i reapply the thermal paste.

you didn`t fit your stock cooler right and thermal paste must be re apply at correct size

Right on the money, mine looks exactly like that. Which ironically is smaller than the one that came with my Core2 Extreme. And that one felt like it attached to the motherboard much more secure. Oh well

A few other answers to questions... I'm using an older Thermaltake Xaser which I absolutely hate, looking to get something else soon, maybe this weekend.

I went ahead and ordered the Cooler Master Hyper 212+ setup which was recommended by a few folks I talked to, should be here tomorrow :)

Just wanted to add I got my Cooler Master Hyper 212+ in today, installed it and temps get a max of 60C on Prime95 and idle at high 30's. Quite a bit of a difference and well worth it.

Great temps they mirror mine and the 212+ is excellent bang for buck congrats
