"(NEW!)" ??? I think not.

Whenever I go back to a thread I read before, it's tough to find where the last post I read was (last post in the thread since that refresh of the page). So I figure that's what (NEW!) beside each post is for. Wrong. It's there for posts I've seen 2 days ago.

What's the deal with this yellow (NEW!) image ... which will likely appear for this post even if you leave and come back to the thread.

Hell, I just logged out and logged back in and this post says (NEW!) next to it.

doesn't this work on a cookie ? so if you trash your anandtech cookie everything is considered new ?
there is also this among others
good luck

the new thing is based on cookies. If you baleet your cookies then all messages are new. Normally logging out and in again fixes it.

... still trying to figure out how it works...

Test:
While logged in, I visited a thread. There were 2 responses, both marked (NEW!).
I left the thread, went back in, and they're still marked (NEW!). Fine.
I then logged out, then logged back in.
I went back into that same thread, now there are 3 responses, all marked (NEW!).

But:
There are threads around that are not marked (NEW!).

I simply do not know why and how there are posts not marked (NEW!). When does it disappear ?
