New I/O Magic DVD writer keeps rebooting my computer...

I was just given an I/O Magic DVD writer, model R-DVD16DL-4. I went to install it, and every time Windows XP began to load, it would freeze for a second and reboot.

I've tried several different things - removing my other CD burner, swapping molex connectors, setting it as both master and slave with the other burner installed, etc. The only thing that got me past the windows startup logo was when I accidentally left it set as slave and the only drive installed. That got me as far as my desktop, and when the Found New Hardware bubble appeared, it registered "CD-ROM DRIVE", froze for a second and rebooted again.

I haven't swapped the IDE cable yet, since I don't have any spares, but the fact that my other burner works fine leads me to believe the IDE cable is okay.

Anybody have any suggestions? Could this be a problem with the IDE cable, even though the other drive works fine?

The drive may be defective - I would question the donor about it. I would not waste a lot of time on this - this is low end compusa burner and even if works it may just burn coasters.

Funny thing, when I get my list of IDE devices on POST, it registers "BENQ DVD DD DL blah blah blah". I know I/O Magic sells some rebranded stuff, and that might lead me to think that this is a rebadged BenQ drive, which ain't all that shabby.

I wonder if that's the case?

edit: Google searches seem to confirm that's what it is.
