New HT Setup

My family is going to buy a new home theater setup, and I was just thinking how dire is it that we get a receiver that has HDMI ins/outs? It makes cabling and switching inputs easier, but other than that, is there a reason to spend a lot on a receiver? I'm only given a $600 budget, so obviously I should probably be looking on ebay for a decent receiver, and leave the rest for the speakers (5.1 setup)

What do you think?

EDIT:

Thinking about getting this setup now:

Onkyo 504 Receiver $169

BIC Acoustech H-100 12" Powered Subwoofer $200 with Make an Offer

Velodyne CHT FRONT ROW SYSTEM GRAY (5 PIECE) (CHTFRSGV) $199

I need to add cables and so forth, but I think I can stay under $600 and have a pretty good system.

The more I think about it, the more I'm thinking just get a nice, but older HK/Onkyo receiver and go higher on the speakers.

I'd say it's a requirement. Try to up the budget some.

Hmm, say the video source has plenty of component/HDMI stuff.

maybe something like http://shop1.outpost.com/product/5057605?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG ? HTIB but maybe it suits your needs?

I saw that at shoponkyo.com at a nice price for refurbished also, but how good are the speakers that comes in these HTiB's?

One thing I forgot to mention is that we already have a DVD player.

Not a bad way to think. Speakers last forever. Receivers don't (features)

Ok, I think I have a system lined up now.

Onkyo 504 Receiver $169

BIC Acoustech H-100 12" Powered Subwoofer $200 with Make an Offer

Velodyne CHT FRONT ROW SYSTEM GRAY (5 PIECE) (CHTFRSGV) $199

If you have all these sources with high quality inputs you need to be looking at 1000+ receiver and receiver alone.

Don't cripple a home theater with crappy sound.

Wait, is this a new one to replace the current Bose stuff?

That stuff might be better than this stuff you just found in case you're looking to replace it.

What does this have to do with what I am asking? I gave a list of parameters already.
And by the way I seek function over anything else, I'm not about to drop 1k on a damn receiver.

I'd look for a 5.0 set of Polks, for that price range those may be the best choice. As for the sub, never really heard of that brand, look around for other stuff. I'd agree that your spending a little less on the receiver than you should be, but I guess if you like it, then it may be all you need.
